2020 MTV VMA Nominations Are Here: Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, And The Weeknd Leading
With exactly one month left for the 2020 MTV VMAS on Sunday, August 30, MTV surprised fans by announcing this year’s nominee list.
Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music talent, Programming & Events at ViacomCBS Media Networks, released a statement. “We’re excited to unveil the incredible list of VMA nominees who shaped this year’s unique landscape. And bring fans a show that celebrates the powerful unifying force of music.” MTV announced the nominees in its biggest categories via Twitter’s new Voice Tweets feature. Last week, MTV unveiled the 17 nominees for PUSH Best New Artist, which have now been whittled down to six.
Who’s leading the pack?
Ariana Grande and Lady Gagalead the pack with nine noms each, including a co-nomination in video of the year for “Rain on Me.” Followed closely behind by Billie Eilish and The Weeknd with six each.
All four artists also appear in the highly coveted Video of the Year category. Eilish’s “Everything I Wanted” is going toe-to-toe with Eminem and Juice WRLD’s“Godzilla,”Future and Drake’s “Life Is Good.” Joined by, Gaga and Grande’s “Rain on Me,”Taylor Swift’s“The Man,” and The Weeknd’s“Blinding Lights.”
Two New Categories?
In keeping with the year that 2020 has been, the VMAs have introduced two brand-new categories. Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance, which spotlights the creative ways artists adapted to the shifting landscape. Starting today, fans can vote across 15 categories until Aug. 23. Voting for the PUSH Best New Artist category will remain active into the show on Aug. 30.
The 2020 VMAs is set to air live at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, August 30 across MTV’s linear and digital platforms from Barclays Center in Brooklyn. As well as from various iconic locations throughout New York City’s five boroughs.
