In a fan video, an aged Steve Rogers watches Falcon transform into Captain America

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a Marvel fan-made video depicts Old Man Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) witnessing Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) take over as the next Captain America. After completing his final mission in Avengers: Endgame, the original Star-Spangled Avenger chooses his loyal ally and buddy to succeed him as he transitions from active duty to retirement.

Given many inside and outside circumstances — all of which were effectively addressed in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — it took a bit for Sam to appreciate the privilege and responsibility of wielding the legendary shield.

Falcon Transform

Many of Falcon’s personal troubles were overlooked by Steve, as Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) revealed to him in their Disney+ show. Sam was already battling with personal financial troubles, as indicated early in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Learning what happened to Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), the first Black Captain America, inhibited him even more from pursuing the role of the next Captain America. The United States government chose John Walker (Wyatt Russell) to be the next Star-Spangled Avenger during Sam’s hesitation.

He appeared to be the ideal candidate at first, but after it became evident that he did not deserve to carry on Steve’s legacy, Steve’s selected heir eventually accepted his inherited position.

Old Steve during the events

One of the most interesting mysteries in the storey is where Steve was during the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Marvel Studios appeared to leave this aspect unclear on purpose, inviting fans to come up with their own theories to explain his absence. This prompted YouTube channel DrMachakil to create a fan-edit picturing Steve on the sidelines, following Sam’s road to becoming the new Captain America.

If Marvel Studios decides to resolve this hanging storey point, they can enlist the help of Smart Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to explain what truly happen.

Apart from knowing the rules of time travel better than most other MCU characters, the Avenger was also present when Old Man Steve reappeared at the end of Endgame. Sam and Bucky may not be eager on discussing it, as demonstrated in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but Smart Hulk may be more ready to do so.
