Why Is Season 4 of Stranger Things Taking So Long to Produce?

Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy explains why season 4 is taking so long, and it’s not because of the pandemic. Stranger Things Season 3 premiered in July 2019, more than two years ago, and saw the kids of Hawkins, Indiana grow up even more as they faced off against the Mind Flayer, their most dangerous foe yet.

Will, Eleven, and the Byers family left Hawkins and David Harbour’s Hopper appeared to be dead as the season closed on numerous game-changing cliffhangers. Hopper is subsequently discovered to be imprisoned in a Russian prison camp, hinting at the series’ growing scope.

Taking So Long

Season 4 of Stranger Things has been troubled by numerous delays. The series had just been filmed for a month when the COVID-19 outbreak forced a halt to production. Filming began in September 2020, but there have been little updates since then, except from a few teaser trailers and clues about the series from the actors and crew.

With the conclusion of filming looming, fans are hungry for any information on the season 4 launch date, and while that information may be forthcoming soon, Levy addressed why the process has taken so long.

Here’s What Producers Said

Levy noted in an interview with Collider that the season’s size has made production considerably more difficult, both because of the number of locations and because filming under health and safety procedures slows down the process.

Filming during the epidemic has been especially tough, according to the producer, because Season 4 is “by far, far, far… the most ambitious of the seasons.” Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the creative team is still a similar, tiny group, which adds to the pressure and slows down the process.

While Levy’s limited words don’t reveal much, it’s reassuring to know that production is nearly over and that at the very least, an announcement could be coming soon. Because Levy and co. still have post-production work to do on the upcoming season, the series is expected to broadcast in late 2021, if not early 2022.

Stranger Things season 4 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated television spectacles in a long time, based on all of the teases.
