Eternals’ Kit Harington Fascinated By Potential For Black Knight Future

Kit Harington, the actor of The Eternals, is enthralled by the prospect of Black Knight’s future in the MCU.

Harington is most recognised for his portrayal of Jon Snow on HBO’s Game of Thrones; in which he appeared in all eight seasons. Between and after his time on Game of Thrones, Harington appeared in a number of other projects; including the miniseries Gunpowder and Amazon’s Modern Love; as well as films like Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii, MI-5, and as Eret in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

He also played Admiral Salen Kotch in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Harington plays Dane Whitman in Eternals, a Marvel character who eventually becomes Black Knight; a superhero who obtains his powers from a magical sword crafted by Merlin and Sir Percy. Whitman’s sword allows him to cut through anything, protect the wielder from death; and deflect any magic directed at them.

The blade, however, comes with a curse: the longer a user uses it, the more bloodlust and violence they will experience; eventually turning them into a violent berserker. In an interview with THR, Harington discussed his future as Dane Whitman/Black Knight; insisting that he is unaware of any “roadmap” for the character in the MCU and is unclear of where Marvel may wish to take him.

When Harington joined the Eternals team, he was told that Whitman has “a really interesting future” and that there are “many different ways” they might go with him. The actor says he was interested in the idea and did some research on Whitman/Black Knight; both in comic books and on the Internet, and that he was enthralled by the character’s potential. What he had to say was as follows:

Kit Feels Two Major Roles From GOT In Another Feels Bigger

“…I’m fascinated by the idea that any character in any story is driven by some addiction to something. And with [Dane Whitman], it’s very palpable that this sword, this blade, has an addictive pull on him, and I find that really interesting.”

While Whitman is unlikely to become Black Knight in Eternals; he does play a role in the broader plot and how it unfolds; particularly in his connection with Cersi (Gemma Chan), his on-screen lover. The love triangle component of the picture has gotten a lot of attention, with Harington, Chan; and former Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden all having a dynamic that plays a role in the film.

While seeing Harington and Madden on the big screen together after portraying brothers on Game of Thrones may sound exciting to fans; Harington claims it doesn’t have the same effect on him. “…to see two major roles from [GOT] in another one feels like a bigger thing than it does to me and Richard,” he says.

While it’s possible that Harington has no idea what Marvel has planned for Whitman/Black Knight’s future after Eternals; that is unlikely to be the case for Marvel, who must have had a plan (or intent) in mind when putting the actor in the part. The role of Black Knight is intriguing, and Harington has the opportunity to fill him out in a unique way; especially given his versatility on Game of Thrones. In many respects, it’s the ideal superhero counterpart to Jon Snow, which should make Harington’s role a breeze, sans the superpowers.
