Why Spider-Man: No Way Home New Trailer Didn’t Reveal Tobey & Andrew

The involvement of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man incarnations was not confirmed in the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer. What hasn’t been shown has dominated the build-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With the picture reported to be exploring the multiverse thanks to Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell gone wrong; there have been numerous reports that Maguire and Garfield will both return. Those suspicions grew louder when Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) were confirmed to return in Spider-Man: No Way Home; implying that the film would cover both Maguire and Garfield’s eras; regardless of which Spider-Men appear.

Both performers, for their part, have played coy about the casting rumours; claiming they aren’t participating despite the fact that few believed them. The teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home didn’t confirm Maguire and Garfield’s presence in the film; despite conjecture, purported leaks, and hypotheses.

Their versions of the characters don’t appear with Tom Holland’s web-slinger in the video; obviating the fact that No Way Home will have all three Spider-Man movies teaming up. Of course, this could indicate that Sony Pictures is aiming to keep the details under wraps until the film’s debut next month. With the hype building and the number of supposed leaks mounting; Sony would be wise to put the rumours to bed once and for all by confirming Maguire and Garfield for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

There’s a risk of disappointment if Maguire and Garfield aren’t in Spider-Man: No Way Home; given the ambiguity around their involvement. Similarly, by keeping them hidden when most people expect they’ll be in the movie anyhow; the movie’s “surprise” appearance becomes the draw; rather than how they fit into the tale. That counts far more in the end: while the fact that Maguire and Garfield are in No Way Home isn’t a surprise at this point; there can still be plenty of shocks in terms of how they’re employed and which other Marvel characters feature.

Although the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer does not confirm whether or not Maguire and Garfield will appear in the film; the next month of reveals should not detract from the hype. Given how things have been going with leaks, Sony is likely finding it increasingly difficult to keep things under wraps; and it’s far better for them to properly unveil things on their own terms (and in HD); so they can reclaim control of the movie’s narrative. Nonetheless, the Spider-Man: No Way Home video teases them just enough to hint at their involvement without giving anything away about their roles.
