West Indies deny Bangladesh of a famous second win as Matthews, Fletcher shine

West Indies Women vs Bangladesh Women, 17th Match, Mount Maunganui, Mar 18 2022, ICC Women’s World Cup

Match Result: WI Women won by 4 runs

Player of the Match: Hayley Matthews

Match Report: Another thrilling match. This World Cup is producing some marvelous matches, with underdogs proving to the top teams that they can not only compete, but also have the capability to cross the winning line. Sadly, Bangladesh failed to produce that upset yet again, as the match result was possible in anyone’s favor till the last over. It was a low-scoring encounter, which saw spinners dominating the bowling charts.

Afy Fletcher and Hayley Matthews ran through Bangladesh’s batting lineup. Most of the Bangladesh’s batters got starts, but the West Indies bowling was too good for any batter to settle in. Campbelle carried WI’s batting in the first innings, scoring a fifty in a total of only 140. It must be noted here that West Indies have won three matches and all of them were thrillers. It just shows that this team can hold their nerves. The batting department needs to improve, as they failed to cross 200 yet. Bangladesh are playing their first World Cup, and they have shown that they belong here.

Stafanie Taylor | West Indies captain: Stable and the medical personnel is taking care of her (Connell). It was sad to see her go down but we look at the bright side, it was probably for us to regroup and we did that and changed the momentum. The batters need to come to the party and we are not consistent. We have to be consistent if we are to compete in this competition. Our batting order is long, we have to come together and win games. Aly (Fletcher) was brilliant. It was her first game back after birth and she was brilliant. It is something we need to talk as a batting group, where we are and where we need to be, there’s no two ways about it. We didn’t perform well since the India game and that’s a concern for us, we can’t really go through the tournament like this.

Nigar Sultana | Bangladesh captain: I think it was a very close match. How our bowlers started was incredible. Pretty disappointed with our batting. We lacked partnerships and I should have played till the end. We have to work on this going forward. We were planning to utilize the conditions and our bowlers managed to do that. We have more games to come and have to take the positives. We lack experience in such situations and if we play more then we will get better.
