Andrew Garfield Explains Why Spider-Man No Way Home Resonates With Fans
Andrew Garfield discusses why he believes Spider-Man: No Way Home has such a loyal fan base. The next Marvel Cinematic Universe film to hit theatres is also the third in a trilogy of solo adventures for Tom Holland’s friendly neighbourhood hero; who first appeared in the franchise in Captain America: Civil War in 2016.
No Way Home was released on December 17 to strong critical reviews and is still playing in theatres throughout the world after a marketing campaign that produced a lot of buzz and intrigue.
Audiences have flocked to watch the latest Spider-Man since its debut, giving the Marvel film by far the biggest box-office performance since the outbreak began.
In just 12 days, No Way Home exceeded the $1 billion mark, surpassing the entire domestic gross of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the previous pre-pandemic blockbuster.
Fans have been ecstatic with what they’ve seen so far, as the mix of a gripping storyline for Holland’s Peter and a multiversal nostalgia tour of Spider-Man films past has created an exciting cinematic experience akin to Avengers: Endgame.
Garfield, reprising his role as Spider-Man from the Amazing Spider-Man films in No Way Home, believes he understands why the picture has been such a smash with audiences. The British-American actor comes back to the project’s primary themes in an interview with ET.
“I think one of the reasons why I think it’s so appealing to so many people around the world, is that feeling of solitude that we can all — and loneliness is maybe a better word — that we can all relate to, as we are figuring out our giftedness, our ordinariness and how that meets our extraordinariness and going through adolescence and becoming a full person. The loneliness that that character feels, archetypally, that he seems destined to feel all his life, suddenly gets broken open.”
He further explained that these three guys who felt very lonely in the universe before suddenly become aware that they were never alone. The actor added that there is brotherhood out there and God knows how many more Spider-Men, Peter Parkers.
