India vs South Africa, 1st Test, Centurion, Dec 26 – 30 2021, India tour of South Africa
Day 1 – India chose to bat
Match Report: Mayank Agarwal carried his form from Mumbai all the way to Centurion. He looked brilliant, and was the aggressor in the opening partnership along with Rahul. Agarwal left the deliveries that were too wide and punished the loose ones. He and Rahul put together a partnership of 117 runs, a confident start to the series for them and ultimately India. He showed sound judgment outside off and left very well in the early contests, along with Rahul before losing his wicket to Ngidi. Rahul and Agarwal had put together India’s first-century opening stand in South Africa since 2010. Rahul ends Day 1 with unbeaten on 122, Rahane is also unbeaten, on 40. Earlier in the day, Kohli got a bright start as well, but Ngidi had him nicking off with a wide delivery.
Kohli will be pretty disappointed with the way he went after a ball that was meant to be left. Ngidi was the only wicket-taker for South Africa on the day, tallying 3 for 45 in 17 overs. The rest of the attack did not have enough control and discipline on a fairly flat track. That’s all we have for you today. We will bring you the videos and highlights of Day 2 as well.
Dean Elgar: Nice and relaxed and looking forward to what is going to be a brilliant Test series. We had a good week’s camp in Johannesburg. We are prepared as best as we could. There’s a debutant in Marco Jansen. Tall left-arm bowler who bowled well against India A. Mulder as all-rounder. Kesh is our spinner. KG, Lungi and Marco are the pacer.
Virat Kohli: We will bat first. Runs on the board playing away home has been our strength. The pitch tends to quicken up here on Day 2-3. Our success away from home started from the series we played here last time. Very challenging place to play. South African unit is always strong and they know the conditions. The prep has been wonderful. Quite lucky to get the centre-wicket for practice. We are playing four bowlers and an all-rounder; Siraj, Shami, Bumrah, Ashwin and Thakur is the all-rounder.
