India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Mohali, Mar 4 – 8 2022, Sri Lanka tour of India

Day 1 Report: As often is the case with Vihari, his performance was overshadowed by other batters. Kohli, playing his 100th Test, was always going to be the center of attention. Pant, who came in after Kohli, scored 96 runs with boundaries like those of T20 Cricket. But we must acknowledge and laud Vihari for his steady knock. He looked very settled on the crease from the word go. His boundaries, in total five, were all in of him being in total control of the shot. With the likes of senior players like Pujara and Rahane dropped, Vihari must make full use of the opportunity granted to cement his place in the side. This inning was definitely a special one.

India scored 357 at the end of the day for the loss of 7 wickets. When Shreyas Iyer was out, the match looked even for both sides. But then Pant went berserk. His knock increased the run rate by a huge margin. He appeared utterly disappointed after being bowled on 96.

Hanuma Vihari: Felt good going out in the middle. I was batting well, and I had a good preparation. Great opportunity batting at number three for India. I am happy to bat wherever the team wants me to, but my most preferred position is number three, I have done it in first class cricket. I thought initially the ball was coming onto the bat well. But once the ball went old, it was difficult to time the ball well. Rishabh is a different kind of a batsman and it was a special innings. We all know how he bats, and it was a special innings today. He helped us get to 350+ on the first day, which will be helpful going forward.

Rohit Sharma: “Yeah, it was something that was important, for the middle-order to come and string together a partnership was good to see. It’s happened quite a few times over the past few games. Don’t want to be too harsh on the bowlers, these things happen. We bowled well in the first few overs (in the batting powerplay), restricted them well, 80 runs in the last five overs, it’s something we need to understand on things to be done in the last five overs, but we did well in the first 15 overs. The pitch was superb, the ball was coming on nicely and these things do happen.

I feel when I do that, the body reflexes work well and I can time my movement well. That’s why I backed away (on the ball that nearly bowled him), but he bowled it well, full and the swing took it away from the stumps. I was in shock when I saw the replays myself. It was important for me to time the ball – it was swinging and seaming. Ishan started well, but when he got out, Sanju got us going, and when he was dismissed, Jaddu bhai came out to close the match for us. I wasn’t really thinking (asked if Lahiru Kumara should have been given an extra over), was focussed on myself and at the present – that’s what we always talk about in the team meetings.”
