As production on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 continues, Sony Pictures Chairperson Amy Pascal reveals that a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 update will be released soon.
The first film, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, was released in 2018 with a script written by Rothman and produced by Phil Lord.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows Miles Morales as he develops spider-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider, but his world is turned upside down when the multiverse’s doors are opened, allowing him to team up with other Spider-People to save New York City from the Kingpin.
Spider-Verse 2 is coming soon
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a critical and commercial smash upon its debut, starring Shameik Moore as Miles, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman. The film went on to gross over $375 million against a $90 million budget and win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, becoming the first non-Disney/Pixar picture to accomplish so since Rango in 2011 and the first since Happy Feet in 2006 while a Disney/Pixar film was up for the award. Prior to the film’s debut, development on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 was confirmed, and now the project has received an exciting new update.
Pascal sat down with Fandango to discuss Sony’s ambitions for the web-slinger as tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home went on sale. Pascal acknowledged that a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is on the way and voiced her excitement for the project when asked about it.
Here’s what Pascal had to say:
“It’s going to be fantastic. We have something to show on that very soon.”
Pascal’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 update may not reveal as much as some fans would like, but her assurance that the studio would have “something to offer on that very shortly” is encouraging.
Outside of the announcement that the movie will continue to explore Miles and Gwen’s relationship, which began in the previous film, many specifics about the film are currently unknown.
