Uncharted is expected to open higher than fellow video game adaptation Mortal Kombat this weekend, according to box office projections.
Following the smash Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland’s latest collaboration with Sony, Uncharted, hits theatres this week after a lengthy production process. The first adaptation of the popular adventure video game series has been in the works for nearly a decade, with several changes of ownership and setbacks.
In 2020, Uncharted was finally released, with Holland stepping into the lead role of Nathan Drake. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom).
Uncharted’s box office expectations
Rather of starting with the games, Uncharted has chosen to start with Drake’s story as a prequel. As the film depicts his first significant journey, Holland plays a younger version of the future treasure seeker. Drake goes out in search of long-lost gold with his new mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Walberg), hoping to find it before the savage Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas).
Uncharted will premiere in the United States on Thursday night, following its international premiere last weekend. According to Deadline’s projections, the film is expected to make an extra $70 million worldwide after earning $22 million in 15 markets last weekend.
Uncharted is projected to earn $27 million in the United States over the three-day weekend, and $30 million over the entire Presidents’ Day vacation, according to Sony. The industry figures are higher, with Uncharted possibly earning in the mid-$30 million level for the four days, or even $40 million.
Mortal Kombat, released by Warner Bros. in April, is the most recent comparable video game adaptation. It was expected to gross $10-12 million at the box office, but it ended up grossing $23.3 million. Uncharted is aiming a little higher, but there are a few things working in its favor. For one thing, Mortal Kombat was released at a time when the pandemic was still causing havoc on theatres, and it also had a dual streaming release on HBO Max. Uncharted is being released in better circumstances, and its PG-13 rating means that movie may appeal to a wider audience.
