It’s a Girl! Teyana Taylor and Husband Iman Shumpert Welcome Their Second Child Hours After Baby Shower
Teyana Taylor is now a mom of two! The 29-year-old singer and her husband Iman Shumpert welcomed their second child together, a baby girl, Rue Rose, on September 6.
Turns out, Teyana actually gave birth to Rue in the bathroom at the couple’s home. Which is just like she did with their first daughter, Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., who is now four. The “Wake Up Love” singer had a water birth at their home in Atlanta just hours after celebrating her baby shower with friends.
“Not in a million years would you be able to tell me we’d deliver both of our daughters in a bathroom”
Proud dad Shumpert shared the joyous news on Twitter, writing, “She’s here! Sept 6 2020 | Rue Rose Shumpert. A healthy child. A little sister. Another daughter. Black love wins. Welcome baby girl…we love you,” he shared along with a sweet video of their new bundle of joy.
Shumpert also shared a brief story about their daughter’s birth with his Instagram followers. “At 3:28 am on Sept 6th 2020 Rue Rose ???? decided that the baby shower thrown for her and mommy was too lit. She didn’t make the party but she managed to make the next day her birth date!!! Now…when we buy homes, we always find a bathroom with great energy. But not in a million years would you be able to tell me we’d deliver both of our daughters in a bathroom without the assistance of a hospital,” he wrote. “Our newest edition entered the world in the water and came out looking around and ready to explore.”
Taylor shared her husband’s post on her Instagram page, adding, “We love you Rue, welcome baby girl @babyruerose ????????????❤️.”
The couple also welcomed their daughter on her very own instagram account that already has nearly 52,000 followers. They captioned her first post on the page, writing, “Hello hello hey hello hello ????❤️????”
Just a day before, the family had gathered around to celebrate Rue Rose’s impending birth. The baby shower was an event filled with balloons and saw Taylor, Shumpert and their daughter Junie, all dressed in red. Celebrity guests like Lori Harvey, Karrueche Tran and rapper Rasheeda were also in attendance.
Surprise Pregnancy Reveal
Taylor and the pro basketball player have been married since 2016. The singer took fans by surprise with her pregnancy reveal which she did through the music video for her song, “Wake Up Love.”
In the closing scene, the actress-model-singer is seen sharing a kiss in bed with her daughter and husband before pulling down her blanket and lifting up her shirt to show her baby bump for the first time. Junie kissed and cradled her mom’s belly as they all blew kisses to the camera. The track is part of the singer’s third record, titled, The Album, which released on Juneteenth.
“I didn’t know I was in labor until I felt her head”
Shortly after, Taylor announced that fellow singer, Erykah Badu was going to be the midwife for her second child. Fans of the singer may recall that she gave birth to her first child, Junie, on her bathroom floor, three weeks before her due date in December 2015. “She came out as a wonderful surprise to everyone,” Taylor captioned her Instagram announcement at the time. “Not knowing I was in labor until I felt her head. It took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands!”
With his “eyes full of tears,” the new father “tied a pair of red headphones around the umbilical cord and the ambulance made their grand entrance 5 minutes later.” The actress added, “She opened her eyes right away, gazed into mine and never cried! He handed her to me wrapped in our bath towel and wiped her face for me to see what LOVE really is. She has blown Christmas away.”
“I don’t know if I want to go to the hospital for this next baby”
The entire ordeal made Taylor feel more inclined to stay at home again when she went into labor with Rue Rose. “I don’t know if I want to go to the hospital for this next baby,” Taylor told Nick Cannon during a Power 106 radio interview. “I’ll make sure it’s not on the toilet or the bathroom floor.” Which did end up happening after all.
“I’m considering home birth, and I’m actually going to be doing it with Erykah,” she continued. “Her and Iman are going to deliver my baby. I’m super excited. I’m going to have her just sing her verse from ‘Lowkey‘ to me to calm my nerves.”
Taylor, who worked with Erykah for a track on her latest release, “The Album,” went on to share that she feels confident about welcoming her second baby. “If I did it once without any type of warning I can do it this time fully prepared. Giving birth like that was scary, but it was such a powerful thing,” she added of the experience.
Speaking more about having Badu as her doula, Teyana said, “I think it was dope to let everybody know what the plan was because her energy is just everything,” Taylor admitted of reaching out to her. “Because I’m so heavy on meditation, she’s been so supportive,” Teyana said, calling the whole thing “amazing.”
“Oh, this is about to happen!”
The Morning singer also opened up about how and why her second pregnancy so far has been different from her first.
“I’m nervous, you know,” she admitted. “Junie was unexpected. Sometimes I feel like the birth of Junie didn’t hurt because I was [so] in shock,” she shared. “So now being prepared for it, I’m back to square one. Like, ‘Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. A whole baby’s about to come out of my vagina,’ she exclaimed. “The thing that’s going through my head is like, ‘Oh, this is about to happen!'”
The singer even talked about her newfound understanding, saying, “I’m learning now, that every pregnancy is different,” she added. “I’ve been sick in ways that I’ve never experienced with Junie, with the new baby. So I can’t assume that, you know, the next birth is gonna probably be as seamless, or as quick,” she said. “There’s so much stuff running through my head, I don’t know what to do with myself.”
Teyana’s latest projects include features from a number of big names like Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott. As well as her midwife, Erykah Badu. A few months back on June 17, the singer threw a star-studded listening party in LA. Fellow artists like Cardi B, Offset and daughter, Kulture, 2, were among other stars in attendance.
