Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 17th Match (D/N), DY Patil, April 09, 2022, Indian Premier League

Match Result: Sunrisers won by 8 wickets (with 14 balls remaining)

Player of the Match: Abhishek Sharma

Match Report: Four straight losses for Chennai Super Kings. The defending champions have begun this campaign terribly. Sunrisers Hyderabad have registered their first two points on the table. While the Men in Yellow led by a new man struggle to open their account. The runs on the board were never enough. Gaikwad has failed to give good starts to the team. Barring his fifty against LSG, Uthappa too has not been impressive. Moeen Ali looked in good touch and might have been threatening had he stayed longer. Rayudu scored run a ball for his 27. The run rate was always on the lower side. Of course, credit must be given to the tight bowling of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Especially Washington Sundar, he restricted the flow of runs quite well in the middle overs. Jadeja gave a nice finishing touch, perhaps he should had been on strike for more deliveries.

In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad never really struggled. Abhishek Sharma played the aggressor role and scored runs quickly. Williamson was too slow but he kept the things well on the other end. CSK bowlers have not struck wickets with the new ball. Their prime arsenal, Deepak Chahar, out due to thigh injury, won’t be available anytime soon. When CSK got their first wicket, Abhishek Sharma was set well to carry the team. Rahul Tripathi came in and he was even more dangerous. He scored at a strike rate of more than 250, hitting boundaries at will. Nicholas Pooran got a chance to bat and he hit a four. Sunrisers are slowly getting things together, while the defending champions look in no position to defend their title this time around.

Ravindra Jadeja: Didn’t get the start what we were looking for. 20-25 short. Our bowlers were looking to bowl in good areas early on, trying to take wickets. Will look to improve in both departments. We’re all professional cricketers, need to work hard on our game, stick together and try to come back.

Kane Williamson: Every game that you play is tough. For us as a side, we want to keep on improving. Outstanding contributions with bat and ball. It was a very good performance. (Chat amongst the group) Largely staying calm and staying on task. We know every team is strong. For us, it’s focusing on our cricket and wanting to make those subtle adjustments, play smart and adjust to conditions. We are starting to see games played on surfaces once, twice. For us, it’s just looking into each match, targeting it, committing to what’s important to us as a team and going out and playing with freedom. It (target) was competitive definitely on that surface.
