Shonda Rhimes who is the producer of Bridgerton has opened up about the actor, Rege-Jean Page’s departure. It was previously reported that the actor will not appear for the second season of Bridgerton.
The producer has finally broken her silence and answered the question all Bridgerton fans have been wondering about. Will Rege-Jean return for a cameo? The actor announced he was leaving the popular series. Both Shonda and Bela Bajaria, the head of Global TV at Netflix sat down for a Hollywood Reporter roundtable.
The roundtable included powerful female executives in the industry. “I was like, ‘I’ve killed many a man that people adore,’” the Grey’s Anatomy boss began. She further shared her surprise that everybody is losing it over a character they have only watched for eight episodes. The producer further shared that Rege is an amazing actor and did an amazing thing to which people responded.
Shonda said, “I also was surprised because the nature of this series is simply, this year it’s this couple, this year it’s [that] couple.” Bela revealed it was unlikely for him to return for the next season. She shared that the books that inspired the show really dictated what they did.
Bela said, “Those books [the Bridgerton book series that inspired the show] really dictated what we did, and we want talent to have an amazing experience and tell the story they’re telling authentically, not, ‘Oh, can you just come over here and do this little thing?’ Like, is that satisfying? Is that what actors want to do? He delivered on his story.”
Rhimes Reveals It Would Not Make Sense to Have Rege in The Background
Shonda shared that it would not make sense for him to return for a small role as the next season is focusing on Daphne’s brother. Anthony, Daphne’s big brother intends to dominate the social season. The producer added that she was just excited about the idea of being able to tell a complete romantic tale that has an end. She said a tale where one is not finding “14 other reasons” why the couple cannot be together. The producer added Rege will be standing in the background of somebody else’s romance which will not make sense.
Bridgerton fans were shocked when they heard their favorite character will be leaving the series. “Pleasure and a privilege,” he tweeted at the time. “An honour to be a member of the family – on and off-screen, cast, crew and incredible fans – the love is real and will just keep growing.”
Even Kim Kardashian was shocked by this news and she said, “I’m NOT ok!!!!” She wrote this over the official announcement that the Bridgerton account posted. The reality star also had multiple questions, “What is happening!!??? How can this be?” However, fans can binge-watch the first season if they want to see Rege but the second season will not include the charming actor.
