Road To NBA Playoffs: The Play-In Tournament

The Play-In Tournament is upon us and this is a chance for the teams to get into the Playoffs as a 7th or 8th seed. This is an important tournament for the ones who want to put their footprint on the Playoffs.

The start of the play-in

The Play-In was started by NBA commissioner Adam Silver in the 2020-21 season. As the league was experiencing less viewership due to CoVid-19, he felt that maximizing the competition in the league would give both the players and fans something to look forward to.

Players at first felt that they were being robbed of their seedings as they gave their effort to reach that standing. But most of them realized that it was an opportunity that they can capitalize on. The Memphis Grizzlies are the prime example of last year’s play-in tournament as they were down in the 9th seed. They beat the Spurs in the first round and went on to defeat the Warriors to take part in the Playoffs.

The level of competitiveness in the Play-In drew so much viewers that the Playoffs garnered more viewers than it had the previous years. This season, the league is unpredictable, keeping the fans in anticipation of what is in store for them.

The Play-In format

This Play-In, we have the Brooklyn Nets facing off against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round from the eastern conference. In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Timberwolves will be going up against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The winners will be competing as the 7th seed in their respective conferences. The loser will face the winner from the clash between the 9th and the 10th seed. From the Eastern Conference that is the match between the Charlotte Hornets and the Atlanta Hawks. On the other hand, the bout is between the New Orleans Pelicans and the San Antonio Spurs.

After that the face-off between the loser of the 1st round and the winner from the 9th and 10th seed, the winner from that matchup will move on to the Playoffs as the 8th seed in the respective conference.

Giving opportunities to teams have allowed strategies to be formulated so that they can make their life a bit easier during the Playoffs. Of course there are no easy games when it comes to the competing for a championship as no team comes with a losing mentality. It could be a possibility to see a team come all the way from the bottom to the summit.
