The comedy series that revolves around the story of four high school girls in their teenage years titled ‘Derry Girls’ is going to conclude after season 3.
Officially released as a Netflix Original, the show saw great audience response. Netflix almost instantly renewed Derry Girls for season 3 when their season 2 wrapped in 2019. However, COVID has sent the release plans of season 3 down the drain.
When Will Derry Girls Season 3 Release?
Netflix has so far not announced the official release date of Derry Girls season 3.
We do not expect Derry Girls season 3 to release until mid-2022 and when it does, brace yourselves because it is going to be the final season of the show.
Derry Girls is produced by UK’s Channel 4 but internationally distributed by Netflix. When the show was renewed for season 3, the show runner of Derry Girls, Lisa McGee said “I love writing this show and I’m so thrilled to be able to continue the Derry Girls story, thank you Channel 4, Erin, and the eejits live to fight another day!”
But just recently Lisa McGee revealed that the show shall conclude after season 3.
Production Schedule
The show’s third season is expected to take place around the same time as the Good Friday Agreement takes place. That means the series is roughly set around 1998 for season 3.
But all hell broke lose due to COVID and according to ProductionIntelligence, a company that keeps track of all UK Productions, Derry Girls is not expected to begin production until late 2021.
One other thing we should quickly note is that the show is also currently planned to get a movie release too. Whether this is in lieu of a fourth season remains to be seen.
