Edge turned heel last week after AJ Styles accepted his challenge for a dream match at WrestleMania. However, the 11-time world champion instantly took shots at The Phenomenal One, stating that he wanted to see the “bulldog” version of Styles and not the one who was playing second fiddle to Omos in a tag team. It led to a fight between them and Edge turned heel. He gave a low blow to Edge and hit Styles with chair shots on the head.
It was reported earlier that AJ Styles had suffered a “severe neck contusion” as a result of the attack from his WrestleMania opponent. It is, of course, a storyline injury that was used to build up heat for their feud.
Edge appeared on this week’s Monday Night Raw sporting a brand new look, arriving in a suit and cutting a promo in the ring shrouded by dark blue lighting. He explained why he viciously attacked AJ Styles last week, saying that he was bringing out the “pitbull” Styles he wants to face at WrestleMania. But he also claimed the attack brought something out in him, a sense of control he now feels over the entire wrestling industry. He claimed to have omnipotence, saying the sensation felt “phenomenal” before the screen cut to black.
The Rated-R Superstar is a true master of his craft. Vince McMahon once emphasized on the art of silence and how saying less can be more. In the promo on RAW, Edge didn’t speak more than he needed to, and it was a clear and concise promo that helped get across the message of how psychotic his heel character can be. Since his return he has just levelled himself up every time. He has worked his character changes to perfection.
Since his return Edge has kept the audience invested in his matches. He faced Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan and The Miz just to name some. He also won the Men’s Royal Rumble 2021. WWE Universe were always behind him as a babyface but with the change in persona people are appreciating his work. It’s likely a move he wanted to make as this character was exactly what gave him the most success in the peak of his WWE tenure between 2006 and 2011. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out at The Show of Shows and who will ultimately walk out victorious.
After delivering a great promo laying an open challenge for WrestleMania 38, his call was answered by AJ Styles. The match itself has everything it needs to be a big hit but the character change of Edge has also made it more interesting. It gives Monday Night Raw a solid storyline and interesting segments. Edge vs AJ Styles has been made official by WWE at WrestleMania 38.
