Doc Rivers Claims He Played A Major Role In Building An Identity For The L.A. Clippers

The story of Los Angeles Clippers is a very interesting one. They were just known as the other team in the LA, of course, after the Lakers. But the Clippers have come a long way from that ignominy and are finally starting to build an identity of their own.

The signing of big-name players like Kawhi Leonard and Paul George has surely helped the Clippers. Although the superstar duo is yet to help the team win an NBA Championship, they helped the team reach the Western Conference Finals last year. Also major credit could be attributed to the veteran NBA coach Doc Rivers. Rivers served as the coach of the LA Clippers for seven seasons and has had his fair share of ups and downs with the team.

“No One Wanted To Play For The Clippers”: Doc Rivers

In a recent interview with Philadelphia Inquirer, Doc Rivers reminisced about the situation of the team when he took over as the coach:

“Listen, I was with this organization for [seven] years. But a lot happened in that [seven] years. I left [the organization] a place of destination. We were the laughingstock. No one wanted to play for the Clippers. We heard all of that. If there’s a free-agent war versus the Lakers, don’t try. That’s something that I will always be proud of. The Clippers now are in the NBA, and I feel like I played a major part in that.”

As mentioned by Rivers, he took over the job when the Clippers were in complete shambles. He deserves all the credit for bringing the cultural changes in the team. Unfortunately, his term with the franchise ended on a sour note as he was fired from his role in 2020. The reason for it was that Doc failed to live up to the high expectations of the fans.

At the end of the day, everyone knows what Rivers did for the franchise. Maybe if it weren’t for him, the team’s reputation wouldn’t have developed the same way it did with him at the helm of the franchise.
