Dave Franco set to play rapper Vanilla Ice in an ‘Extreme’ biopic

Dave Franco has confirmed he’ll be portraying the role of Vanilla Ice in an upcoming biopic about the breakout 90s rapper, titled, To the Extreme.

Franco envisions a project similar to The Disaster Artist

During a recent interview with Insider, Franco confessed that he envisions the project to be like The Disaster Artist. A film which starred the actor and his older brother, James Franco. The 2017 comedy centered around the making of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room. Which has now been famously deemed as “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”

Dave explained, “With that movie, people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of Tommy Wiseau. But the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was. That’s the tone we want for this one as well,” he said.

“He’s been super helpful in the process”

Franco revealed that the biopic has not yet started production as it has been delayed, like other movies, due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the film’s crew is “inching closer and closer to pre-production.” Dave added that he’s had phone calls with the Ice Ice Baby hitmaker, aka, Robert Van Winkle. The actor has been using this extra time to do some research and what better way to do it then from the man himself.

“Rob is such a sweet and intelligent guy and he’s been super helpful in the process of getting all the details correct and making us privy to information the public doesn’t know,” Franco said. “Just talking to him I can’t help but think about the rabbit holes I’m going to go down to get ready for the role.”

“From a high-school dropout to making music history”

The Biopic is named after the Singer’s album that spent 16 weeks atop the Billboard charts and sold 15 million albums worldwide. To The Extreme was written by Chris Goodwin and Phillip Van. It first thrust into the spotlight when it landed on 2018’s The Black List. Which is an annual list of unproduced screenplays voted to be favorites amongst film executives and those working in Hollywood.

To The Extreme chronicles the rapper’s journey, “From a high school dropout, selling used cars in Dallas to having the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts with Ice Ice Baby. A young Vanilla Ice struggles with stardom, extortion attempts, and selling out as he makes music history,” the log line for the project read at the time.

Franco’s recent projects including gearing up for the July 24 release of The Rental, his directorial debut, which drops via video-on-demand and stars his wife, Alison Brie.
