Christian Serratos Felt Pressure While Portraying Selena Quintanilla In Selena: The Series

Christian Serratos opened up about playing the iconic character of Netflix’s Selena: The Series as Selena Quintanilla herself.  The actress shared that it is difficult to talk about.

The show evolves around Selena Quintanilla’s rise to fame before her tragic death at the age of 23. Christian has admitted to the immense pressure she felt while taking the role especially when the fans of the legend are also involved. “I still find it difficult to talk about,” Christian told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s so personal to me because I’m fully aware of how personal it is to all her fans.

The actress revealed how she feels this incredible sense of pressure but it is good pressure. She explained that if she needed any motivation to do the best in this role, she said it is because she doesn’t want to let anyone down.

Christian shared, “I know how deeply this woman resides in the hearts of so many.” She added that the series will be very eye-opening for people because they are showing so much more of Selena’s life.

The Walking Dead alum explained when she got the role, she was given her music from the show. She further explains how there was a brief moment where she felt deceit. The actress shared, “When I got the role, I was given her music from the show and there was this brief moment where I felt deceit. How am I such a huge fan and I hadn’t heard these songs?”

She further added how the series is going to be great. Christian shared that they already know the iconic songs but there is much more than music to enjoy. And that will either be for the first time or all over again.

“The actress in me is fascinated by the journey of a complex character”

Meanwhile, after the release of the highly-anticipated series, Natasha Perez who played the role of Selena Quintanilla’s murderer on the show is worried about her safety. As the cast is aware that fans will have strong opinions when it comes to the portrayal of the legend.

Natasha who plays Yolanda Saldivar in the series shared how she had conflicting emotions about taking on the role. Yolanda was the business advocate and the fan club president of Selena. She is currently serving her life sentence for the murder of the iconic singer.

Natasha recalled thinking what it would be like to play an evil villain. She shared how fascinating it sounded from an actor’s point of view to dissect what someone like that had in mind. The actress only appears in the ninth episode for a single scene in the series.

“I remember working with the director on the scene, and she asked me how I was feeling,” said the actress, who has also had roles in HBO’s Room 104 and Curb Your Enthusiasm. “I told her I was feeling conflicted. The actress in me is fascinated by the journey of a complex character, but the human in me has all sorts of feelings. But the actress in me is also worried about her safety.”

The actress shared how she does not want viewers to have any trouble separating her from the character. She revealed how a lot of people take it seriously and think it is real. The actress shared in this case the character is real but it is not her.

Natasha revealed how she was planning on meeting the real-life Yolanda. However, she decided against it with respect to Selena’s family. The series was not entirely focused on her tragic death but on the singer’s life.

“The series isn’t about her death,” she said. “Yolanda is there to add tension to what’s going on, but what’s going on is so beautiful because it’s an artist finding herself, an artist emerging and finding her place within her family and society.
