On Tuesday, Warner Bros. broke the heartbreaking news that their eagerly anticipated Batgirl movie had been postponed. Leslie Grace would have played the title character in the Batgirl movie, which had already finished filming earlier this year. However, according to rumors, the project was not a good fit for DC’s intentions for theatrical or HBO Max releases. The Batgirl movie has been officially stalled off until any further updates on the same.
The news was unexpected by the fans and for the writers as well. One such comic writer was Scott Beatty. Beatty, who co-wrote the Batgirl: Year One miniseries from which the Batgirl movie seemed to take its cues, recently posted a response to the cancellation on his blog.
In her social media post, she wrote “Since production began in Glasgow, Scotland last year, I’ve been following all of the scoops and rumors related to the film, mainly because star Leslie Grace quoted my own BATGIRL: YEAR ONE on social media when she unveiled the official Batgirl costume, and set photos hinted that the film was drawing upon BATGIRL: YEAR ONE in thematic inspiration AND some major plot-points”
Batgirl Movie Cancellation
According to the revelations, Batgirl appeared to have taken a lot of inspiration from all eras of Batgirl’s comic book history, including Batgirl: YEAR ONE and the NEW 52 version of the character that fellow author Gail Simone helped popularise.
A report from Bombshell news reveals that the entire $90 million project has been axed off which makes it almost invaluable. It seems like a rather expensive write-off to put on hold a finished piece that is still in post-production and presumably not suffering creatively according to the sources.
Beatty has also expressed how disappointed she s abotu the cancellation of the film. She has also revealed that A Batgirl-related project was circled by WB, and the funding was cut. Years ago, WB animation director Lauren Montgomery and Batman: The Animated Series master Bruce Timm were collaborating on BATGIRL: YEAR ONE as a cartoon feature, but the underwhelming performance of a Wonder Woman animated film prevented BATGIRL: YEAR ONE from getting the go-ahead.
Batgirl is based on a story of a young woman- Barbara Gordon, who is now the new protector of the Gotham city. She embarks on her journey of being a superhero and protecting the Gotham city, by getting inspired by the ideologies and following the footsteps of Bruce Wayne/ Batman.
Christina Hodson wrote the script, which was directed by Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi. JK Simmons would have played Commissioner James Gordon, Michael Keaton would have played Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Leslie Grace would have played Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
