According to James Gunn, the Peacemaker Show is more rooted than The Suicide Squad

The upcoming HBO Max series Peacemaker starring John Cena, according to writer/director James Gunn, is more grounded than The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker, a surprise newcomer to the DC Extended Universe, makes his debut in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is now in theatres and on HBO Max.

Cena’s character joins Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and plenty of other villains on a suicide mission on Corto Maltese.

Douchey Captain America

Peacemaker has been dubbed a “douchey Captain America,” capable of killing countless men, women, and children in the name of, well, peace.

Following his work on Warner Bros./DC Films’ The Suicide Squad, Gunn wrote and directed five of the eight episodes of HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff. The series, which will presumably take place after the flagship film, recently wrapped filming and will feature flashbacks exploring Peacemaker’s origins and eventual incarceration.

Peacemaker also stars Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), Robert Patrick, and Chukwudi Iwuji, in addition to Cena.

Steve Agee, Freddie Stroma, and Jennifer Holland will reprise their roles as John Economos, Vigilante, and Emilia Harcourt, as seen in The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene.

Words From James Gunn

Gunn discussed The Suicide Squad and the upcoming Peacemaker series in an interview with THR. Gunn was asked what genre the series is shaping up to be now that he is editing Peacemaker.

Read what he had to say about it below:

“There are many similarities to The Suicide Squad in that it is no holds barred, but there are also many differences in that it is quieter in some ways.”

In The Suicide Squad, Gunn’s satirical style fits Cena’s character like a glove. The tone of Peacemaker, similar to Amazon’s The Boys, should expand Gunn’s corner of the DECU, allowing for even more spinoffs. Gunn will then start work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, his final film with that particular ragtag group of misfits.

The Suicide Squad has already received a fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to perform well in its opening weekend. We’ll see if Peacemaker is as successful when it arrives on HBO Max early next year.
