Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Divorce, Admits, ‘My Life Has Been a Little Bit of a Dumpster’

Kelly Clarkson is refreshingly honest about her struggles of going through a divorce. The talk show host and Grammy-winning singer, who filed for divorce from husband, Brandon Blackstock in June, recently sat down for an Interview on Sunday Today With Willie Geist.

The American Idol alum didn’t hold back as she talked about what it’s like filing for divorce from her husband of nearly seven years. “I mean, it’s no secret. My life has been a little bit of a dumpster,” she told Host, Willie Geist via Zoom. “Personally, it’s been a little hard the last couple months.”

The actress continued, calling divorce, ‘the worst thing ever.’ “I’ve been talking to friends that have been through divorce. I don’t know how people go through that without having some kind of outlet because it is the worst thing ever for everyone involved,” the mother of two added.

“This’ll probably be the most personal one I’ve ever released”

For The Kelly Clarkson Show host, that “outlet” is her forthcoming album, which she expects to release next year. The singer talked about how the latest album will reflect her split from Blackstock, ending her seven-year marriage and pouring her emotions into the new album.

“This’ll probably be the most personal one I’ve ever released,” the singer admitted. “And the whole record is basically every emotion you experience. From the beginning of a relationship to the end of what it is now or where it is now. And it’s been very therapeutic for me.”

The 38 year old singer songwriter filed for divorce from Brandon Blackstock, 43, in June, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The singer also requested joint legal and physical custody for their two children, daughter River Rose, 6, and son Remington Alexander, 4. Kelly is also a stepmom to Blackstock’s children Savannah, 18, and Seth, 13, from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth.

“I was having kind of a hard week, and I literally almost started crying”

The Singer-Songwriter also admitted that in the midst of all that’s happening in her life, she won her first Emmy. For her eponymous daytime show, The Kelly Clarkson Show in the Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host category.

Clarkson went on to reveal that she was so caught up with her personal life that she “totally forgot that the Emmys were on.” The Stronger singer revealed what went down the time she learned of her win.

“I’m sitting there playing with Legos, with my kid. My executive producer Alex calls me and is, like, ‘You are the best host.’ And I was, like, ‘Thank you.’” Clarkson continued, admitting, “I was having kind of a hard week, and I literally almost started crying. Because I was like, ‘This is just the nicest thing to call someone out of nowhere and just be kind.’ And Alex was, like, ‘No, no, no, no. You won the Emmy for outstanding…’ and I was, like, ‘What?!'”

Although the event was held virtually this year, the singer shared an ecstatic message thanking everyone after her big win. She also had some kind words for Blackstock, who is also an executive producer on the show. “Thank you so much to @BBlackstock for believing in me & convincing me to do @KellyClarksonTV show,” which premiered last year.

“There are a lot of little hearts involved in this”

Just last week, Kelly explained why she doesn’t want to go into detail about her divorce. Clarkson revealed that while she’s a “very open person,” out of respect to her children, she’ll be keeping most of the details surrounding their split under wraps.

“I am a very open person, but I’m not going to be able to be truly open about this in certain aspects because there’s kids involved,” she said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

“There are a lot of little hearts involved in this and while people feel, ‘Oh my gosh, what a loss …’ imagine how it is in the epicenter of the storm,” the singer confessed. “It’s a lot to process and deal with, just as a family. So because it’s not just me, I probably won’t go too deep with it.”

Clarkson also explained that she hasn’t planned some way to talk about it beforehand. And that She will eventually do it only when she finds herself ready and comfortable to share that part of her life publicly.

“I think that I will navigate a way in which to be open and honest about it eventually, probably via the show. And it’ll probably, I’m assuming, happen organically when someone says something in conversation or something,” she explained. “It definitely wouldn’t be planned.”

Future Projects

Apart from working on new music, gearing up for the return of her talk show on Sept. 21, she will also be resuming coaching duties on the upcoming 19th season of “The Voice,” which premieres October 19 on NBC.

The singer will also be filling in for Simon Cowell as a judge on “America’s Got Talent.” She also will be hosting next month’s Billboard Music Awards for the third time on October 14.

‘I’m a good amount of busy. I know it looks like a lot on paper. I’ve kind of always had a lot of jobs,’ the Trolls World Tour actress admitted.
