Netflix cancels Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, Ends With Part 4 Later This Year
The popular Netflix series, which stars Kiernan Shipka as the beloved teenage witch, announced on Wednesday that its final chapter, Part 4, will premiere later this year.
The Official Announcement
Show runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa released a statement.”Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from Day 1. The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone’s favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show. I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell. The way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see Part 4.”
The show’s Instagram and Twitter account also gave fans a few sneak peeks at what’s to come, captioning a slideshow of Part 4 photos. “It all comes down to one last Chilling Adventure. Our final chapter is coming later this year. Coven forever.”
Many fans are disappointed to learn of the cancellation and demanded why the women-led shows, CAOS and ‘Katy Keene‘ were canceled. Whereas, ‘Riverdale‘ has been renewed for a fifth season.
Rough few days for Aguirre-Sacasa
The decision to end Sabrina wraps a particularly rough few days for Aguirre-Sacasa. Aguirre’s Riverdale spin off, Katy Keene, was canceled at The CW after one season.
It is unclear whether any characters from either ending series would make their way to the mother ship Riverdale.
The prolific show runner and Archie Comics content chief still has a lucrative overall deal with producers Warner Bros. TV. The good news for now, is that the fifth season of Riverdale, his first series, is coming back to The CW in 2021.
CAOS Timeline and Viewership
“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” was originally developed at The CW as a companion series to “Riverdale,” but was moved to Netflix with a 2 season, 20-episode order. Riverdale too was first developed for Fox and moved to The CW.
CAOS was renewed in late 2018 for parts 3 and 4, that is, seasons 3 and 4, as part of a 16-episode order. Sources note that Netflix splits up seasons into two parts for select shows as part of a budget-conscious approach to select programming. Sabrina’s first “part” reportedly had a favorable 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and 90% among critics. After its first three parts, it now has an 84% rating among critics and a 69% with viewers.
Sabrina comes from Warner Bros. TV and super-producer Greg Berlanti. Berlanti currently holds the record for the most scripted series currently in the works across the TV landscape. However, that number has dwindled from 23 to 18. This is after Katy Keene, Arrow, Blindspot, God Friended Me and Sabrina are removed from the tally.
