Carmelo Anthony has developed a fantastic second act in his career. Anthony, who spent the most of the 2018–19 season out of the league, quickly found a home with the Portland Trail Blazers and adapted to a new position as a supplementary scorer who typically comes off the bench.
When it was revealed that Anthony and the Houston Rockets were splitting ways, even though they hadn’t formally released him, everyone believed Anthony’s career was over. But he has established himself as a bench scorer, and rosters nowadays can never have enough of those. Anthony is one of the top free agents left because of his high demand around the league as a result of this.
Given that he is 38 and has not yet won a ring, Anthony will undoubtedly be trying to do so at this point in his career. That may have an effect on where he choose to play next in his illustrious NBA career. Let’s look at three teams that should consider signing Anthony this summer. There are a few contenders who could definitely use a player of Anthony’s quality.
Three organisations that should sign Carmelo Anthony:
Lakers of Los Angeles
Carmelo Anthony recently played for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021–2022, and there have apparently been recent discussions about a future return. Given that the Lakers still have LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook on their roster, it is logical to predict that they will improve in the upcoming season. Maybe Anthony’s return would help L.A. get back on track as another bench scorer.
Last year, Anthony was one of the Lakers’ few reliable bench players. He contributed 4.2 rebounds a game in addition to his 13.3 points per game on 44.1 percent shooting. The fact that many of Los Angeles’ top combinations featured Anthony and his scoring skills is not unexpected considering how difficult it was for them to find lines that worked for them the previous season.
Given that Anthony is already familiar with the Lakers, this match makes sense. This offseason, Los Angeles attempted to improve their bench, but Anthony hasn’t been a part of that process yet. He may be the deciding factor in their quest to emerge from obscurity in the 2022–23 campaign as a dominant force in the Western Conference.
Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors just won the 2022 NBA Finals, so joining them may make sense for Carmelo Anthony if he wants to get a ring before he retires. After losing Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II in free agency, the Warriors might absolutely look to bolster their bench.
Anthony would be the ideal wing scorer for the Warriors off the bench. When necessary, he can come up with shots on his own, and he’s still accurate enough that defences can’t overlook him when shooting from beyond the arc. Anthony isn’t terrible on defence either, and if a team tried to attack him, he could often hold his own.
New York Knicks
Perhaps it’s time for Carmelo Anthony to experience a type of homecoming. It could be time for Anthony to wrap up his legacy in New York after an extraordinarily successful six and a half season career with the New York Knicks. Anthony may be the bench player who gives the Knicks the extra boost they need to become a championship contender in the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks have already made significant offseason spending to sign free agent guard Jalen Brunson, and they seem to be close to completing a massive trade for guard Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz.
