India vs Pakistan, 2007 T20 WC Final,  Sep 24, Johannesburg

Match Result : India won by 5 runs

Player of the Match : Irfan Pathan

Match Report : Ten days earlier, India and Pakistan couldn’t be separated in Durban. In front of a jam-packed crowd at the Wanderers on Monday, they played out perhaps the best final ever seen in a major ICC tournament. Once again, the ice-cool Misbah-ul-Haq threatened to drag Pakistan back from the troubles, but the Indians just about held their nerve to clinch a five-run victory and the inaugural ICC World Twenty20.

After scrapping hard to get to 157 for 5 by facing some tigerish bowling and fielding, India were inspired with the ball, and Pakistan appeared to be well out of contention with 54 needed from 24 balls and just three wickets in hand. But when Misbah smacked Harbhajan Singh for three sixes and Sohail Tanvir chipped in with a four-ball 12, the impossible became possible.

With Misbah on strike, Pakistan needed 13 from the final over. After a great deal of thought, Mahendra Singh Dhoni gambled on the inexperienced Joginder Sharma. When he started with a wide, Indian fans got angry, and the situation became even more desperate when Misbah pummelled a full toss miles over long-off for six.

But with victory in his grasp, his judgement failed him. Moving across his stumps, he went for the scoop down to fine leg. He didn’t connect cleanly, and millions on the subcontinent held their breath as Sreesanth came under the ball at short fine leg. When he held it, the stadium erupted. What a fantastic game of cricket!

MS Dhoni | India captain: “It’s one of the things I will treasure for the rest of my life. I’d like to congratulate the boys and thank them for the response they have given me. No-one expected us to win and the way we played today we deserve a big celebration. Pakistan bowled really well today in the second half. But we knew we had runs on the board and we could bring some pressure on the batsmen. Bhajji was not 100% sure of getting yorkers in the death. I thought I should throw the ball to someone who really wants to well in international cricket. Jogi did a really good job.”

Shoaib Malik | Pakistan captain : “First of all I’d like to thank people back home and the Muslims around the world. We gave our 100%,” he says. “India have a strong batting line-up. We did well to restrict them to less than 160 but our batting didn’t come through. The Indians bowled really well and we played some bad shots. That’s why we ended up on the losing side in this game.”

Irfan Pathan | Man of the Match : “It’s a great comeback for me. I held my nerve and bowled in the right areas. The pitch was a bit on the slower side. It gripped a bit when I bowled slower balls. I tried to mix up the pace and keep things tight. In the end it could have gone any way. The bowlers all did really well when Misbah was batting well. We played as a team and we won.”

Shahid Afridi | Player of the Tournament : “Winning and losing is part of it. But we played really good cricket. Congratulations to the Indian captain and the whole team. I struggled a bit with my batting but I concentrated on my bowling.”
