The HBO Max Show Peacemaker Will Take Place in the Past and Present

HBO Max’s Peacemaker, the planned The Suicide Squad spinoff series from writer/director James Gunn, will be set in both the past and the present.

Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, is introduced in The Suicide Squad as a “douchey version of Captain America” whose father was a soldier who taught him how to kill from the time he was born—which is effectively the same backstory as Bloodsport (Idris Elba). Bloodsport, on the other hand, is more reasonable, whereas Peacemaker is unconcerned about how many innocent people he has to kill in the sake of freedom.

The Suicide Squad And Peacemaker

Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), and King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) join Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), and King Because The Suicide Squad has a high body count, Gunn warned viewers not to grow attached to any particular character while promoting the picture.

t wasn’t obvious whether Gunn’s Peacemaker spinoff, which he wrote and directed five of the eight episodes, would take place in the past or present when it was revealed. Due to the unclear narrative referencing to Peacemaker’s origins, many suspected the series would be a prequel.

Here’s What James Gunn Thinks

Gunn discussed his career, The Suicide Squad, and the planned Peacemaker series in an interview with Variety. The director was asked about how The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene sets it up as a sequel, despite the fact that the series is supposedly an origin story.

Here’s what he had to say–

“Well, you learn about Peacemaker’s origins via the story. When Bloodsport is talking about his father and what his father was like in the movie, you transition to a scene of Peacemaker, and Peacemaker nods. That’s where the entire “Peacemaker” series gets its start.

Peacemaker goes for Ratchercatcher 2 as he is “thorough,” following Rick Flag’s last remarks, “Peacemaker, what a joke.” Bloodsport, thankfully, arrives just in time to shoot Peacemaker with his own bullet. Peacemaker will now join with John Economos (Steve Agee), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) to save the planet in the Suicide Squad post-credits scene.
