The director of Red Notice 2 confirms that a sequel film is in the works with Netflix
Rawson, director Marshall Thurber has begun talks with Netflix about a sequel to Red Notice, though no script has been written yet.
Red Notice, hailed as one of the most expensive Netflix films ever made, has likely outperformed the streaming company’s expectations in its first weeks.
The buzzy globe-trotting thriller, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, debuted on Netflix in mid-November and immediately became the service’s largest opening day for any Netflix original film. Red Notice has surpassed Bird Box as the most-watched film on Netflix as of this Sunday.
Red Notice 2 confirms with Netflix
The film follows an FBI profiler and two art thieves as they travel the world outwitting each other in search of Cleopatra’s Eggs, which are valuable artifacts. Agent John Hartley (Johnson) must join forces with Nolan Booth (Reynolds), the world’s second-best art thief, to apprehend the Bishop (Gadot), a very cunning criminal who always seems to be one step ahead. The ending of Red Notice, as everybody who has seen it knows, leaves the door wide open for the plot to continue in a possible sequel.
Red Notice 2 has yet to be approved by Netflix, but it appears that the streaming service is interested. Thurber confirmed to Collider lately that he’s begun preliminary talks with Netflix regarding the possibility of a movie. Thurber has an idea for where the storyline could go if the streamer decides to continue with it, even if he hasn’t started working on it yet.
He stated,
“I’m not working on the script for a sequel…I’ve certainly been noodling with what I would do for a follow-up and not to telltale out of school but yeah Netflix…we’ve been having those conversations.”
Given the success of Red Notice, a sequel appears to be a certain thing at this point. With recent hits like Extraction and The Old Guard expected to receive sequels in the future years, Netflix has shown an increased interest in establishing its own film franchises. Red Notice has outperformed Netflix’s other originals, and the film’s conclusion wonderfully sets up a sequel that could be even more interesting than the first.
