‘Supergirl’ to End With Upcoming Season 6 at CW

Melissa Benoist is hanging up her cape. In a joint decision, the CW and Producers, Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions have announced that the upcoming sixth season of “Supergirl,” set for premiere in 2021, will be its last.

According to sources, writers have already started developing storylines for the final 20 episodes. The order is expected to be longer than most broadcast series this coming season, including the CW scripted shows. Which will be launching from January.

The series is also slated to begin filming in Vancouver next week, after production on all 2020-21 broadcast series was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Moreover, “Supergirl” in particular had been targeting a later start of production in order to accommodate Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy.

Supergirl

Supergirl,” who happens to be Superman’s cousin, starred Benoist in the titular role for all 5 of its seasons. It follows the story of Kara, who was sent to Earth from Krypton as a teenager and raised by the Danvers family. She was transformed into a superhero after embracing her powers, becoming National City’s protector. The most recent Season 5 also starred Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines. Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair and David Harewood, with special guest star Jon Cryer.

Over the past five years, “Supergirl” has touched upon immigration, gun control, and other important issues. In its fourth season, it made history by casting Nicole Maines as Dreamer, TV’s first transgender superhero.

The Second Arrowverse Series to come to an end

News of “Supergirl” wrapping up comes almost exactly four months after the season 5 finale. The series originally debuted on CBS back in October 2015, before joining the CW lineup from season 2 onwards in October 2016. It was the third Arrowverse show to premiere on the network, following Arrow and The Flash.

With this news, “Supergirl” will become the second Arrowverse series to come to an end. “Arrow,” the show that started it all in 2012, concluded its eight-season run in January, earlier this year. As it keeps adding new series every season, the CW also has been retiring veterans. It ended three established series in each of the last two seasons, including “Arrow,” “Supernatural” and “The 100” this past season.

Based on characters from DC created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, “Supergirl” comes from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros Television. With Executive producers, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner, Jessica Queller and Rob Wright.

“She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful”

Melissa Benoist addressed the show’s ending via social media in a heartfelt message. “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” she wrote. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.”

Benoist added, “She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful,” Benoist wrote on Instagram.

Last year, the actress had come forward in an emotional video, revealing that she was a “survivor of domestic violence” and was previously in a long term abusive relationship. Which she says impacts on her work.

Benoist continued in her post, “I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season. ♥️ el mayarah. ???? @supergirlcw

“Supergirl” will return for its sixth and final season in 2021.
