Queen’s Gambit Becomes Most Watched Netflix Limited Series

Netflix has a new winner when it comes to limited series. The Queen’s Gambit took the position of being the most-watched limited series on the platform.

According to the streaming service, almost 62 million people have tuned in to watch the limited series. This marks the most views any limited series has garnered within the first 28 days of its release.

The limited series has reached the No.1 position in 63 countries including the United Kingdom. Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Original Series Vice President wrote that three years ago Scott Frank approached them about adapting The Queen’s Gambit, it felt like a compelling tale. It was adapted from Walter Tevis’ 1983 book about a young chess prodigy.

He shared, ‘However, I don’t think any of us could have predicted that The Queen’s Gambit – and the extraordinary Anya Taylor-Joy – would become the global phenomena they are today or our biggest limited scripted series ever.’

The limited series features Taylor-Joy as Beth who is a chess prodigy. She is set out to be the world’s greatest player. Although the character had a growing addiction to drugs and alcohol that challenged her position and happiness.

The Queen’s Gambit also includes Bill Camp. The series, however, has even got 100 percent approval from Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix’s series consists of just seven episodes, was released on Netflix on October 23, 2020. According to Variety, the biggest number earned by a series was the first season of The Witcher.

The series earned a whopping 76 million viewers in the first 28 days of its release. However, Tiger King, a docu-series earned almost 64 million viewers in its first month. The streaming platform has changed its methodology of counting viewers as they now count a viewer if they have watched 2 minutes of an episode or film.

Other popular limited series for Netflix include 2017’s Godless, 2018’s Maniac, 2019’s Unbelievable (which was viewed by at least 32 million people), and 2019’s When They See Us, which garnered 23 million views in its first month.
