Normani Reveals Being in Fifth Harmony Took A Toll On Her Confidence

Normani opened up about her life through lockdown in the latest cover for Women’s Health. The singer also discussed how she keeps her high self-esteem after being in Fifth Harmony.

When asked about being overlooked in the group which originally included her, Camila Cabello, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui. She said it altered her perception she had of herself and that certain things happened so blatantly. The singer also shared how people comparing them took a toll on her confidence.

She said, “For a long time, I didn’t believe in myself because I didn’t feel like I was given the opportunity to.” However, Normani revealed that now she does daily positive affirmations to start her day to boost her self-esteem.

The Motivation singer shared that she looks at herself in the mirror and manifests and speaks things that she wants to happen as if it already did. According to the magazine, some of the few statements that Normani tells herself are: You are one of the greatest entertainers. You are a representation for an entire generation. You have a purpose.

The singer further shared how another boost in her confidence includes receiving Rihanna’s support. She shared, “You are one of the greatest entertainers. You are a representation for an entire generation. You have a purpose. But it definitely gives me confidence.”

Normani further expresses her gratitude towards feeling seen and heard and being able to be the voice for people. She shared how being a Black woman, she feels they are multifaceted and have so many capabilities. The singer also adds an important point that is to show Black girls and boys they can be anything they want to be.

The musician also opened up about making music and how she has held her ground. She said, “For a long time, I was stressed out about checking boxes like, ‘Is this Black enough? Is this pop enough?’ But music started feeling way better when I just went into the studio with the mentality of being Normani.”

Further explaining, the artist shared that people will always remember how one made them feel and what a record did for them. She added that her lyrics have more depth and they are intentional. The musician also describes it as coming from an authentic place because she now feels more connected to herself than ever before.
