Kate Hudson Calls Criticism of Sia’s Music An “Important Dialogue”

Kate Hudson opened up about the criticism her film, Music was under as she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The movie is written and directed by singer and songwriter, Sia and has been under criticism for its casting and portrayal of autism. Kate has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the movie as Kazu “Zu” Gamble. The actress shared that she felt the backlash was an “important dialogue”.

However, she noted that the intended message of the film had been expressed. She added, “I think when people see the film, they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that was put into it.”

The movie was under fire because of Sia’s decision to cast Maddie Ziegler as a non verbal character with autism instead of a performer on the autism spectrum. This caused major backlash from people on social media.

Kate told Jimmy that she welcomed the larger conversation as she noted feeling “terrible” that some people felt left out over the casting and portrayal of Maddie’s character.

She shared how the spectrum is so wife and should be approached with far more conversation and understanding. The actress said, “The spectrum is so wide and should be approached with far more conversation and understanding of how can we be more representative, what are the best ways to do that.”

“There is no one who wants to upset anybody.”

Kate further told Jimmy that they wanted to tell the best stories they can. She said there is no one who wants to upset anybody as people feel that about anything. The actress shared, “We want to tell the best stories we can. There is no one who wants to upset anybody. When people feel upset about anything, it’s our job to listen and encourage more conversation with other people who want to tell these stories.”

Autism rights activists had demanded Sia to cancel her upcoming movie, Music. As we previously reported, Sia’s movie had received major backlash after its trailer release.

The movie features Maddie Ziegler, who is seen in Sia’s music videos. She is part of the movie as a nonverbal autistic teen. The movie also consists of activists and basically people on the autism spectrum. It received backlash for its portrayal of offensive stereotypes and visual effects.

Not just that, a petition was launched for the cancellation of the movie’s premiere. The petition was launched by Hannah Marshall who identifies as an autistic woman herself. Back till Tuesday, the petition had garnered over 500 signatures to cancel the film’s premiere.

Hannah explained how offensive it is for her as an autistic individual herself and also for other autistic individuals. “As an autistic individual, I am asking that this film is canceled,” Marshall wrote on the fundraising page. “It is extremely offensive to myself and other autistic individuals. Sia has shown no remorse for her inaccurate and hurtful betrayal of the community.”

She further wrote how the movie will not have any major impact on history. Hannah added, “Canceling it will express that intolerance to neurodivergence is unacceptable in today’s society. Sia and her associates have additional avenues for funds; they will survive even if no money is made from this film.”

Many supporters have also come forward in the comments section of the petition to share their own experiences. A user shared that she is an autistic woman and she finds Sia’s movie extremely distasteful. She shared she also feels disappointed in how the singer handled the criticism she got for the same. Sia responded to the criticism she received for her directorial debut.

Disability activists called out the singer for using the phrase “special abilities” instead of “disabled” for people with autism. The singer also received immense backlash for casting a neurotypical actor to play the lead role as an autistic person.

Sia broke her silence and defended her upcoming new movie Music after receiving criticism over its casting. According to Variety, the movie will revolve around the story of Zu, who has a strained relationship with her family. She, later on, becomes the only guardian to her half-sister, Music. Her half-sister is a teenager on the autism spectrum.

However, when the trailer was launched, it did not go down well with people as they began to criticize. Viewers expressed their disappointment of finding Maddie Ziegler, Sia’s longtime collaborator, being cast as the autistic character instead of an actor who is autistic.

One user expressed their fury and wrote how unacceptable it is and that there can be no excuses. The user wrote that Sia should know better than “to allow able-bodied and neurotypical to represent the disabled community”.

Sia, however, responded to the backlash and explained that she had initially tried working with a beautiful young girl with a nonverbal spectrum. She explained that the actress found it stressful and unpleasant after which she cast her collaborator, Maddie.

But the criticism did not stop, as viewers pointed out that she could have done more even if she was on short notice. “Hi! I’m an #ActuallyAutistic professional actress that could have been cast & hired on short notice,” another follower wrote.

The singer apologized for never having been introduced as she wrote that her character was low functioning. She shared that after attempting to work with autistic actors, “they” suggested her to go for Maddie.

The criticism continued as several autistic actors responded to the tweets and one user said, We all said we could have acted in it on short notice. These excuses are just that- excuses. The fact of the matter is zero effort was made to include anyone who is actually autistic.”

The singer responded saying she might be a bad actor and stated there are thirteen people on the spectrum in the movie. She further began to defend her project as she shared that she cast thirteen neuroatypical people, three trans folk as doctors, nurses, and singers.

Sia wrote, “F–king sad nobody’s even seen the dang movie. My heart has always been in the right place.” The singer was accused of ableism as one follower questioned if she made efforts to do any research or consult the community. She wrote that she spent three years researching and that’s why she was so bummed.
