Singer Demi Lovato has revealed that they are now identifying as non-binary. The pop star shared the news with their fans recently through a video posted on Twitter.
They said they feel this is what best represents the fluidity that they feel in their gender expression. The singer explained, “I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”
Demi had previously shared their interest in both men and women as they added that they don’t want to be seen as an expert or spokesperson. The Commander-in-Chief singer shared that they have opened up another level of vulnerability by sharing the news. In the video, the singer has said that they want to take this moment to share something very personal.
The former Disney star said, “I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you. Over the past year-and-a-half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work, and through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary.”
They further revealed about changing their pronouns to “they/them”. The singer further explained their feelings as they said, “I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”
“I want to make it clear I’m still learning and coming into myself”
Demi made it clear that they are still learning and coming into themselves. The singer said, “I want to make it clear I’m still learning and coming into myself – I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.” They wrote that every day, we wake up and we are given another opportunity to be who we want.
The Dancing With The Devil singer revealed that they have spent the majority of their life growing up in front of all of her fans. They further added that fans have seen the good, the bad and everything in between. The musician further said, “Not only has my life been a journey for myself, but I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras.”
Demi explained how happy it makes them share more of their life with fans. They said they feel proud to let everyone know that they identify as non-binary. The former Disney star said, “I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward [heart emoji] This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.”
The singer explained that they are doing this for those out there who haven’t been able to share who they truly are. They said, “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox (sic)”
Demi had previously stated that they are “very fluid” in their sexuality in a Facebook special for National Coming Out Day in October. They had shed light upon the moment it dawned on them that they were attracted to women.
