Scarlett Johansson Says She’s Made A Career Out Of Past Controversies
Scarlett Johansson wants you to know that she is also a person who has had her share of controversies.
She rose to fame with her very prominent and breakout female character, Black Widow in the Avengers franchise. The actress who has been nominated for an Oscar twice in her life sparked backlash over two movie roles. She also faced criticism because of the comments she made about controversial director, Woody Allen.
Scarlett talked about the controversies in her recent interview with The Gentlewoman which was published in its Spring/Summer 2021 issue. The actress joked that she has made a career out of it. She faced backlash back in 2017 when she accepted the main role in Rupert Sanders’ movie Ghost in the Shell. This was a film adaptation of a Japanese manga series.
After a year, she faced criticism yet again after rumors of her being cast as a transgender man in the same director’s upcoming movie, Rub & Tug. But she withdrew her name from the movie after backlash from the LGBTQ community and their allies. The actress had cited “recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting”.
The actress has got her standalone film, Black Widow after playing a supporting character for years in the franchise. Back in 2019, she sparked further controversy when she spoke in favor of Woody. He had directed her in Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Her comments came around the time he was accused of molesting his estranged daughter.

“I wasn’t looking at the big picture, or I was inconsiderate…”
Woody has denied all these accusations and Scarlett said, “I love Woody…I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.” The actress voiced out that she will have opinions about things because that is who she is. She told The Gentlewoman that everyone has a hard time admitting when they are wrong about things.
Scarlett said, “I mean, everyone has a hard time admitting when they’re wrong about stuff, and for all of that to come out publicly, it can be embarrassing. To have the experience of, Wow, I was really off the mark there, or I wasn’t looking at the big picture, or I was inconsiderate…I’m also a person.”
She further explained that she does not think that actors have any obligation to have a public role in society. The Avengers star revealed that the idea that one is obligated to because they are in the public eye is unfair. She said, “You didn’t choose to be a politician, you’re an actor.”
Scarlett further explained that whatever one says, any statement made either correct or wrong, people will have an issue with it. She shared. “We judge each other all the time. We judge ourselves constantly. I think people equate that connectivity to being self-aware. To me, it’s different from being self-aware.”

“…your sense of reality is completely skewed.”
The actress further added that reacting to everything that is coming at them through the phone, skews your sense of reality completely. She said, “And reacting to everything that’s coming at them through this f–king thing—[holds up her iPhone]—your sense of reality is completely skewed. It’s not normal to be that exposed. You can be exposed whenever you’re in the public eye, but to then be on the receiving end, like a raw nerve, of all this stuff back? It’s too much!”
Scarlett had talked about her controversial past in 2019 as she told Vanity Fair that she is not a politician. She shared that she cannot lie about the way she feels about things. The actress explained, “I’m not a politician, and I can’t lie about the way I feel about things. I don’t have that. It’s just not a part of my personality. I don’t want to have to edit myself or temper what I think or say. I can’t live that way. It’s just not me.”
The Black Widow star further added, “And also I think that when you have that kind of integrity, it’s going to probably rub people, some people, the wrong way. And that’s kind of par for the course, I guess.”
