Emmy Awards 2020: Zendaya, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ & More, See the Full Winners List

After having the most unconventional yet memorable awards season, why should TV’s biggest night be any different? For the first time in its 72-year history, the Emmys was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the night lived up to its excitement as the best television performances of the year were celebrated at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards.

Safe to say, this year’s Emmys were unlike any other with the celebs tuning in from their homes due to the pandemic. The Television Academy made this year’s festivities a weeklong affair. Nicole Byer hosted the Creative Arts Emmys, which were split over five nights leading up to Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony. Hosted live by Jimmy Kimmel from L.A.’s Staples Center, with winners accepting awards remotely, virtually, and digitally.

Despite all these new changes, one thing remained the same, the Academy still crowned the best shows of the year with golden statuettes. And in 2020, that meant plenty of wins for shows like “Succession,” “Watchmen,” and of course, “Schitt’s Creek.” The latter of which broke records as they blazed through the ceremony, winning more comedy awards in a single night than any previous series.

Most Wins for A Comedy Series

Talking about “Schitt’s Creek,” Pop TV’s riches-to-rags comedy had 15 nominations to their name. “Schitt’s Creek” became the first series to win every major comedy award. Including acting wins for Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy.

Dan also added to his thoroughly impressive night by winning in the writing and directing categories as well. To top off their splendid run, the show claimed the Outstanding Comedy Series award, making it seven trophies in a row. Additionally, two wins at the Creative Arts Emmys, set a new record for most wins by a comedy series in a single season, with nine awards in total.

Big Night for HBO

HBO also held its own trophy parade. First and foremost, HBO’s dystopian superhero drama “Watchmen,” which was up for a whopping 26 nominations, received 11 Emmys in total, more than any other program. Regina King won the Emmy for Lead actress in a limited series or movie for her performance. While her co-star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also received the Supporting actor in a limited series or movie award.

“Succession,” which was up for 18 nominations, won seven Emmy Awards, including best drama series. Jeremy Strong won the award for lead actor in a drama series for his role on the show. While Jesse Armstrong also won the writing award for the drama series and Andrij Parekh won for best director.

HBO Euphoria’s Zendaya also made history with her win for lead drama actress, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the category. As well as becoming the second Black actor to take this trophy.

“I Know This Much is True’s” Mark Ruffalo also triumphed in the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category.
