What If…? Released After Loki To Show the Multiverse’s Possibilities

Marvel’s What If…? will be released after Loki, allowing the franchise to explore the multiverse’s unlimited possibilities. There have been various hints for some time that the MCU is moving beyond the Infinity Saga and into the multiverse.

For starters, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the first film of 2022. Furthermore, various stars from previous Spider-Man films are expected to appear in this year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. With its game-changing events, the MCU’s most recent offering, Loki’s season 1 finale, laid the stage for all of this.

In the Loki finale, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) caused chaos to the cosmos and effectively initiated a multiversal war after murdering He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a variation of Kang the Conqueror who maintained the Sacred Timeline.

While the immediate effects of this will not be visible in live-action for some time, the MCU is plunging headfirst into the multiverse with the animated series What If…?, which investigates what would have occurred if various events in the movies had gone differently.

Show picks up right after Loki

What If…? executive producer Brad Winderbaum addressed the decision to schedule the animated show after Loki in a recent interview with Deadline. Though they may not appear to be series that would benefit from each other, their significance in the Marvel universe makes them an ideal match.

Winderbaum explained, “It’s no coincidence that the show picks up soon after Loki.” “The multiverse has exploded in every direction imaginable. What if…? allows us to do just that.”

From Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) taking the super-solider serum to T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill, What If…? will explore a variety of intriguing situations. It’s unclear whether any of the stories explored in What If…? will seep into the MCU’s live-action side, but it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.

What If…? will provide the initial steps into the multiverse, which Loki opened. Furthermore, the fact that a second season is already in the works indicates that this concept will be around for a while.
