WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris Never Thought Monica Would Join The MCU

Before Captain Marvel, WandaVision actress Teyonah Parris never thought that her character, Monica Rambeau will join the MCU. Back in 2019, the MCU released its first-female led movie, Captain Marvel.

It was set in the 90s and featured Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. The film focused on Carol’s origin story and it set up a vital plot threads for the MCU’s future. Captain Marvel introduced a young version of Monica. Fans of the Marvel comics know that Monica grows up to become a superhero in her own right.

However, Captain Marvel kept her as someone who is looking up to her mother Maria and Carol. Cut to the present, and WandaVision features Teyonah as the adult Monica. The first few episodes of the show attempted to hide her real identity. Her identity was revealed in episode 4 of WandaVision.

Monica is a SWORD agent and has followed the footsteps of her mother. She is one of the main players in trying to figure out what’s actually going on with Scarlet Witch. The character is expected to stick around in the MCU as she’s already confirmed to be appearing on Captain Marvel 2.

The MCU has seemingly hinted at the big plans they have for Monica now. But the actress herself thought that it would never happen. Teyonah discussed WandaVision and was asked when she learned of Monica’s superhero alter egos from the comics.

The actress admitted that she has been aware of Monica for quite some time. But she knew about it even before Captain Marvel came out. She wrote off the character, assuming Marvel would never utilize her. which is why she is excited to be playing the character now.

“I knew Monica was a superhero before I even got the role..”

Teyonah shared. “Oh, I knew Monica was a superhero before I even got the role because fans on Twitter had been fan-casting me as Monica Rambeau. This is way pre-‘Captain Marvel’.” The actress further added that she looked her up casually and realized that the character is pretty cool.

But she thought that the character will never see the light of the day so she never stayed on the idea. She said, “So that was really my introduction to her, maybe, like five or six years ago when fans started doing that. So when she showed up in Captain Marvel as a young girl, I was like, ‘Ooo! Okay!’”

However, the Marvel star said she did not expect that she would become a full-grown woman and character in the MCU. The actress revealed that because of it, this was a pleasant surprise to learn. She shared, “So it was a pleasant surprise to learn that not only would I be able to tell this woman’s story, but that the world would be able to see another Black female superhero in the MCU.”

WandaVision or Marvel has not confirmed it yet but by the looks of it, the series seems to be gearing up to give Monica superpowers. The latest episodes of WandaVision revealed the character’s trips through the energy barrier of Wanda’s hex has rewritten her cells.

All the signs point towards Monica following Captain Marvel’s footsteps which could put more focus on her role. But seeing how Teyonah thought Monica would never make it to the MCU, it confirms the unpredictable things that can happen in this franchise.

However, what the future of Monica’s character is after Captain Marvel 2 is yet unknown. But for the time being, she will be staying in the MCU as she is a major part of WandaVision. The end of the series might provide some hints about her Captain Marvel 2 role. Fans will have plenty of content to speculate and create theories on.
