WandaVision Originally Had 10 Episodes Planned

WandaVision had originally 10 episodes planned instead of nine according to the director Matt Shakman. It was Marvel’s first Disney+ series which came to an end last weekend.

WandaVision premiered back in January and revolved around Wanda Maximoff played by Elizabeth Olsen and Vision played by Paul Bettany. The series was timed right after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The couple had settled for an idyllic suburban life and as sweet as it was, many fans were surprised because Vision was dead and it didn’t fit the typical Marvel project at the beginning.

However, over the course of nine episodes, WandaVision gradually revealed its many mysteries revealing that Wanda created her own reality including a new Vision in her grief. Vision could only exist in the rewritten reality of Wanda that she had over the town. But that was not the only surprise under Marvel’s wings.

The series revealed Agatha Harkness played by Kathryn Hahn was the villain. Marvel also gave fans the complete transformation of Wanda into Scarlet Witch. With back-to-back episodes every week, WandaVision made eight weeks pass by in a flash. However, it has been revealed that there might have been another episode of the Marvel show.

Matt appeared on Kevin Smith’s FatMan Beyond show to discuss the WandaVision finale. He discussed how the series evolved throughout the production process. As per Matt, the Marvel series was constantly changing and had 10 episodes planned out in total. But unfortunately, that changed over time.

“The story was changing, especially a lot of the real-world stuff and the finale”

The director said, “Well, yeah, things were constantly changing and getting rebroken. The story was changing, especially a lot of the real-world stuff and the finale. There was a lot of experimentation going on and sort of trying different things out.

“We also at one point had 10 episodes planned and we ended up collapsing a couple, you know just to make the rhythm feel a little bit better,” Matt revealed. He further added how they constantly kept changing after they wrapped ip in Atlanta and the pandemic hit.

Matt shared that they ended up having months off and further changes took place during the post-production. He said ideas would come up and then again little changes would happen. Some might argue that WandaVision did its job in the nine episodes that were released but there would have been even more factors we could obsess over.

There would have been a possibility of more insight on Agatha’s story or for characters like Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis. The extra episode does sound tempting but WandaVision needed to downsize.

There were rumors going around that the Marvel show will have an extra secret episode 10 and would be released this week. Matt, however, debunked the theory and it is safe to say we are looking forward to further what Marvel has to offer (which is a lot). The series also left some threads dangling for the future MCU projects leading up to perhaps Secret Invasion, Spider-Man: No Way Home, or even Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
