The final blockbuster sitcom starring Randall Park has been ordered by Netflix

Netflix has ordered a new sitcom starring WandaVision’s Randall Park about the only remaining Blockbuster Video store.

Blockbuster, the once-popular video, and DVD rental store, first opened its doors in 1985 and continued to grow steadily throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

With over 9,000 stores and approximately 85,000 employees throughout the world, the company peak in 2004.

The final blockbuster sitcom

Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 due to increasing competition from companies such as Netflix, which was previously a mail-order DVD business, and Redbox’s automated DVD rental kiosks, as well as increasing pressure from the 2008 financial crisis.

After several years of financial difficulties, most surviving Blockbuster locations were closed in 2014, leaving only a handful of privately owned franchise locations throughout the world. There is now only one Blockbuster store left. The store is in Bend, Oregon, which will be the subject of a Netflix documentary in 2020.

Netflix is developing a new series centered on the last Blockbuster store, according to Deadline. The show will follow a close-knit group of employees at the world’s only remaining Blockbuster Video. Blockbuster, a 10-episode series, will star Randall Park, who is most known for his roles in The Interview, Always Be My Maybe, Fresh Off the Boat, and, most recently, WandaVision. The show is believed to focus on how the final Blockbuster employees manage to keep their little business afloat in the face of adversity.

Vanessa Ramos, who has previously worked on smash sitcoms Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is the creator of the single-camera show, which was originally planned for NBC. The show’s writers and executive producers are David Caspe and Jackie Clarke, who previously collaborated on Superstore and Happy Endings. Davis Entertainment’s executive producers are John Davis and John Fox.

The show will have an ensemble cast with real Blockbuster logos and costumes, but no more performers have been announced yet. Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s Head of Comedy, stated the show would tell the “story of a dedicated bunch of coworkers with a lot of heart.”
