The Eternals is the first MCU film to have a poor Rotten Tomatoes rating

Eternals, Marvel’s next film, has become the MCU’s first Rotten film on Rotten Tomatoes. Chloé Zhao is the director of Eternals, her follow-up to the Best Picture-winning film Nomadland.

Zhao made history by becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated for and win a Best Director Oscar Aside from directing, Zhao is one of the writers for Eternals, a film that will introduce a new cast of characters to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

Rotten On Rotten Tomatoes

Eternals is a film about a race of immortal beings who have lived on Earth for thousands of years, seeing the rise and fall of human civilizations. Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, and Gemma Chan are among the stars in Zhao’s film. Eternals will introduce characters from the Marvel comics that are virtually unknown to general audiences, similar to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, in the hopes of achieving the same level of success. However, the film’s early reviews indicate that those objectives may be in danger.

At the time of writing, Eternals had a 57 percent rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, making it a Rotten film. Despite the fact that the film has received 148 critical reviews, it is three points short of the 60 percent required for the Fresh label.

Eternals is the first film in the MCU franchise to receive a Rotten Tomatoes score, despite being the least well-received of the franchise’s prior 25 movies.

As more qualified critics published their thoughts over the past few weeks, Eternals’ Rotten Tomatoes score has fluctuated between the low-60s and the high-50s. While it appeared that the film might just hang on to a Fresh rating, the reviews have started to suffer, and it’s unlikely that the film will recover at this point. The studio seemed to think highly of Eternals during its creation, praising Zhao’s work as one of the best MCU films produced thus far, adding to the surprise of the low scores.

Record for the lowest-rated MCU film

Thor: The Dark World, which premiered in 2013 and received a 66 percent rating, previously held the record for the lowest-rated MCU film. While this is a low grade, it is still higher than the Fresh line and only a single percentage point lower than The Incredible Hulk from 2008.

On the other hand, the MCU boasts a number of films with ratings of over 90%, with Black Panther receiving the highest rating of 96 percent Fresh. The critics’ rating for Eternals is presently only the critics’ rating, as the film has yet to be released in theatres, leaving the door open for a better audience response.
