Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles Joins ‘The Boys’ Season 3 as ‘Soldier Boy-The Original Superhero’

“Supernatural” star, Jensen Ackles is jumping from one Eric Kripke show right into another. The star of the long-running 15 season CW series will join the cast of Amazon’s The Boys for its third season. The casting reunites him with Supernatural creator and The Boys show-runner, Eric Kripke.

On Monday, Ackles took to Instagram to announce that once he finishes filming his final 2 episodes as Dean Winchester, he’s going to suit up on season 3 of The Boys. In the cheeky clip, the 42-year-old actor, contemplates his post-Supernatural life, before he’s given a copy of The Boys graphic novel. “I keep wondering what I’ll do….when @cw_supernatural finally ends this year,” Ackles wrote on Instagram. “Then it hit me.”

“He’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role”

Ackles will portray the pivotal role of ‘Soldier Boy aka the original superhero’ in the streaming drama. After Soldier Boy fought in World War II, he became the first super celebrity and a mainstay of American culture for decades.

In The Boys comics, Soldier Boy is a bumbling cowardly version of what Captain America was supposed to be. Through the events of the story he gets both used and abused by both Billy Butcher and Homelander alike. Fans of both shows are no doubt going to freak out seeing Ackles go against his tough-guy Supernatural swagger. However, the most excited person seems to be show-runner, Erik Kripke.

“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream. To provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment,” said Kripke in a statement. “I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of ‘Supernatural’ to ‘The Boys.’”

The Dream Team

“The Boys” was renewed for a third season in July during its Comic-Con@Home virtual panel. The show is based on the best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It was developed by Eric Kripke, who also serves as show-runner.

Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver also executive produce. Along with Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty. As well as Phil Sgriccia, Craig Rosenberg, Rebecca Sonnenshine, Ken Levin and Jason Netter. Ennis and Robertson also co-executive produce along with Michael Saltzman.

The second season of The Boys will premiere with the first three episodes on Friday, Sept. 4. And the five remaining episodes will be made available each Friday following, culminating in an epic season finale on Oct. 9. The 8-episode Amazon Original series will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 territories around the world. It is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television Studios with Point Grey Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film.

Official Synopsis for Season 2

The official synopsis reads, “The even more intense, more insane, Season 2 finds The Boys on the run from the law. Hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought. In hiding, Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) try to adjust to a new normal. With Butcher (Karl Urban) nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social media-savvy new Supe. Who has an agenda of her own. On top of that, the Supervillain threat takes center stage and makes waves as Vought seeks to capitalize on the nation’s paranoia.

Jensen Ackles acting credits

Ackles currently stars on CW’s longest running drama, “Supernatural,” which Kripke created in the early-aughts. And first launched on the WB network in 2005. It was scheduled to wrap up its 15th and final season in May of this year, before the coronavirus pandemic forced a production shutdown. Now, it is on-track to wrap this fall on the CW.

Ackles’ previous acting credits include “Devour,” the big screen remake “My Bloody Valentine” and the independent rom-com “Ten Inch Hero.” On the small screen he is also known for “Smallville,” “Dark Angel,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Days of our Lives.” The latter earned him three Daytime Emmy nominations and won him a Soap Opera Digest Award in 1998.
