Sia recalls protecting Maddie Ziegler from Harvey Weinstein
Sia proves that she’s not only Maddie’s “bodyguard” but also her guardian angel. The singer recently gave an interview on the Zach Sang Show. Sia opened up about her relationship with Maddie and how she protected her from Harvey Weinstein. The Grammy-nominated has been working with the Dance Moms reality star since she was 11 years old. Maddie Ziegler shot to greater fame after starring in Sia’s “Chandelier” music video. The 2014 award winning video was just the start of many more greater collaborations.
Maddie, who is also seen wearing a wig like her godmother, is usually the star focus of the singer’s music videos. Ziegler has been in Elastic Heart, Big Girls Cry, Cheap Thrills, The Greatest, Rainbow and Sia. Maddie has also starred in the music videos for Thunderclouds and No New Friends by the LSD. LSD is a collaborative super group which includes Sia alongside Diplo and Labrinth. Many music videos later, the songstress has become a mentor, friend and a protective parental figure to the teenager.
“I felt this extreme desire to protect her”
Sia, who was recently on the Zach Sang Show, all but praised the teen icon. “I just love her so much. As soon as I met Maddie I felt this extreme desire to protect her, and I think it was part of my own healing.
The performer also noted she feels “terrible shame” about “throwing” Ziegler into the spotlight. “I wasn’t conscious at the time. I had no idea ‘Chandelier’ was going to be so massive and I had no idea then she would blow up to be this famous little teenager.” She explained. “But I’ve taken responsibility for it by providing her security. That’s the most I can do really. I’m always there for her if she wants to cry or has a bad day or has questions about life. That’s what I’m here for. I would say, You know, it can stop at any time, right? If you want it to stop, I can make it stop. You can just go back to being a normal person again.” Maddie however, didn’t seem to mind the spotlight and even told Sia, “No, I love performing. I love dancing, and I love acting so much.”
Sia, who has just become a grandmother after her adopted son welcomed two kids, continued. ‘So I thought, a good way I can keep her safe is just by making projects for her. Therefore most of the time we’re working together.
“That was really disgusting”
It’s a good thing Sia has that motherly instinct. The singer revealed that she actually may have saved the teen from Harvey Weinstein. Sia told Sang, “You know I kept her off a plane that Harvey Weinstein tried to get her on. I know that there’ve been times that my insight has really made a difference. It has kept her safe. Yeah, that was really disgusting.” She added, “When he invited her, that’s when I called, I told [her mom] Melissa, I had to. I just said, ‘Please don’t, do not do that, do not do that, do not do that.’”
In March, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of first-degree criminal sexual assault and third-degree rape. One of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, the disgraced producer’s decades of shocking, predatory behavior were exposed amidst the #MeToo movement of 2017. Weinstein fell from one of the most powerful names in Hollywood to one of the most disgraced.
