‘Scammys’ Trend After Only 1 Grammy Nomination For BTS
If Hollywood has the Oscars and American television has the Emmys; the Grammy Awards are one of the most prestigious award presentations in the Western music industry. Not only is it an honour to be nominated for a Grammy, but musicians consider it a victory just to be nominated.
Even international artists compete for recognition from the American music award event because the Western music industry has admirers all over the world. This is why fans were ecstatic when BTS, the popular Korean boy band, was involved.
BTS is currently one of the most popular groups on the planet. The global sensation has a massive following, a financially successful discography; and a devoted fan base. For months, their latest single album, ‘Butter,’ and its companion tune; ‘Permission to Dance,’ topped all charts, including Billboard, putting them on par with The Beatles.
Fans, however, claim that the Grammys are utilising the K-pop trio for clout, as they did last year. Despite their huge hit “Dynamite,” BTS was only nominated for one Grammy in 2021; and it appears that history is repeating itself.
BTS reportedly submitted seven entries for the 2022 Grammys; including their K-pop album ‘BE’ and their English singles ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance.’ They were also tapped to announce the Grammy nominees for the ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ category; following their historic night at the 2021 AMAs. BTS was even participating in the nomination announcements, thus ARMY expected a good night for the boy band.
BTS ARMY Enraged That Grammys Did This Again
Unfortunately, they were only nominated for the 2022 Grammys with ‘Butter’ in the ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ category. Similarly, BTS was only nominated for ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ at the Grammys in 2021. They were also the first K-pop act to perform at the Grammy Awards. While there was a lot of anticipation for their performance because the event had teased that BTS would be the next group to perform from the start; they were one of the last groups to perform.
Fans were outraged that the K-pop trio was being exploited for views, and it appears that the fire has been fueled further. They had a lot to say, with terms like ‘Scammys’ trending. One ARMY tweeted, “Hey, #Scammy See? We don’t need your stupid awards!!” Another fan shared, “Are you kidding me…??? Once a snake always a snake…I can’t beleive these pple have the audacity to do sh*t all over again…there is no use of nominating other artist when they have to favour their sugar american babies in the end…”
While fans welcomed BTS on their second Grammy nomination, they also stated, “CONGRATULATIONS BTS YOU DESERVE EVERYTHING ALL LOVE ALL ACHIEVEMENTS EVERYTHING ..THAT ONE SH*TTY SHOW IS NOTHING IN FRONT YOU AFTER ALL WE ALL KNOW WHO NEEDS WHOM..BTS HAS ALREADY WON..N GRAMMY F*CK YOU MF CLOUT CHASER SH*TTY SHOW.”
Fans further explained why they thought ‘Butter’ was already a year’s best album, even saying, WHO NEEDS WHO?? #BTSPavedTheWay”. While ARMY was disappointed, they also found the situation amusing, as Beethoven was nominated multiple times, prompting the hashtag ‘Beethoven sunbaenim.’
