Sandip Ray claims he hasn’t seen the Netflix India anthology inspired on his father’s short fiction

Ray’s son Sandip said he will watch the films shortly to form his own judgement after the Netflix anthology of four short films based on Satyajit Ray’s story generated varied reactions from fans.

Srijit Mukherji’s Forget Me Not, Abhishek Chaubey’s Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, Mukherji’s Bahrupiya, and Vasan Bala’s Spotlight are included in the anthology produced in Ray’s centennial year. Sandip stated that while he had seen the trailer for the film, it was necessary to see the complete work in order to develop one’s own judgment.

Sandip, who has directed several feature films based on Ray’s popular fictional sleuth Feluda, told the Press Trust of India that he had given Netflix permission to use four of his father’s stories for the anthology, but that he didn’t want to be kept in the loop about scripting, narration style, or adaptation because that was the prerogative of the concerned directors assigned to the project.

“I will shortly view all four works in order to establish my own opinion, but I will do so as an individual,” he stated. “I’m hearing both compliments and complaints,” Sandip said, “and that’s perfectly normal for any work of art, including anything derived from the works of a personality like Ray.”

Without saying anything, the national award-winning Bengali director wrote a series of tweets praising the way he and two other directors handled Ray short pieces.

The Chotuskon director published a tweet from a netizen on microblogging site that read: “Congratulations to @srijitspeaketh @alifazal9 & #ShwetaBasuPrasad on an engaging Ray adaption. It was always going to be difficult; I believe #ForgetMeNot captures the essence of a #SatyajitRay narrative perfectly. Also, the artist would have approved of the stunning #AjantaCaves photos.”
