Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Almost Donated to Game of Thrones Petition

It’s no secret that fans were disappointed with the final season of Game of Thrones. And one of the castmates has revealed that he almost donated to a petition of Game of Thrones. Nikolaj Coster Waldau has revealed that he was going to donate to a petition that asked for a different ending of Game of Thrones.

The actor revealed in an interview with Variety that he found it hilarious that fans were pushing for a different ending. But soon realized that everyone had their own opinion. ‘I was aware of the petition for a new ending, which I thought was hilarious,’ the 50-year-old talent said.

He said he almost decided to donate to the petition but found the idea hilarious that HBO will agree to say so many people want it so let’s do it. The actor said he found the fandom really interesting because everyone had their own opinion. He acknowledged people wanting different yet specific things to happen at the end.

‘There is Still a Massive Community Dedicated to Game of Thrones’

Nikolaj also acknowledged how hard ending GOT must have been for hardcore fans who used to follow the series for years. He told Variety that it was a sort of combination of them imagining an ending and for them to not want the series to end. The actor said, ‘You lived with this for eight seasons. There is still a massive community dedicated to Game of Thrones. I think there was a real fear that was going to go away. It had to end.’

He was asked if he had any opinions about the way his character’s journey ended. Nikolaj said it was fine and said he should be asked this in ten years, then he can talk about it. He said, “How do you end that story? Let’s talk about this in 10 years, then you can talk about it. But now, I think it’s a little too recent.”

Fans had mixed reactions about the series finale and the majority of them it seems wanted a new GOT ending. The series received a 32 Emmy nominations. A change.org petition about wanting a different ending with competent writers. The petition’s description read, ‘David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.’

They went on to say the ending makes no sense and urges HBO for giving fans an ending the hit series deserves. The petition has over 1,800,000 signatures.

HBO Did Not Expect Such Massive Backlash

Benioff and Weis were left to their own devices for the show’s final. Bloys described their contact with the creators and executives as minimal. ‘When a show is in its sixth, seventh or eighth season, by that point there’s usually a rhythm between showrunners and the network as to what they expect,’ Bloys said.

The network likely did not expect such a massive reaction from fans. Fans were furious because of the ending, the plot holes, and the prop mishaps. Although several members of the cast came to their show’s defense and blamed the backlash on negative media coverage. They were at San Diego Comic-Con last year where organizers had to remind attendees before the panel to make the cast ‘feel welcome.’

Nikolaj on the other hand had a lot of fans booing at him after describing his character’s death in the arms of his sister Cersei as ‘perfect’. He said it made sense to him and was interrupted by a heckler. ‘This show has brought so many people together, watching it, loving it. So obviously when it comes to an end it’s going to piss you off no matter what… Just don’t call people names,’ he added.

Conleth Hill jokes he does not regret starting the petition as the rest of the cast members supported the show. However, he said that fan response was positive for all these years. The actor referred to the backlash as a media-led hate campaign.
