Nawaz Sharif non-bailable arrest warrant issued in Tosha Khana case

ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad accountability court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a case of illegal purchase of gifted vehicles from a government treasury.

Nawaz Sharif is currently based in London and the court has ordered the Foreign Office to execute a non-bailable arrest warrant through the Pakistan High Commission in the UK.

When the hearing of this reference started on Thursday, NAB Deputy Prosecutor General Muzaffar Abbasi told the court that the accused Nawaz Sharif is currently residing in London and his home address has also been ascertained. He said the former prime minister was living in the Avonfield apartment and these were the same flats in reference to which Nawaz Sharif was convicted.

During the hearing, the NAB deputy prosecutor told the court that the court order could be complied with by placing advertisements in British newspapers.

The court did not agree with the NAB counsel’s suggestion and issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for the accused and directed the Foreign Ministry to impose Atmal on court orders.

Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari and Yousuf Raza Gilani are accused of taking away cars donated by heads of different countries after paying a small amount of money.

The accountability court judge also granted a one-day exemption from co-accused in the reference and former president Asif Ali Zardari’s attendance. Another co-accused in the case and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani also applied for exemption from attendance at the next hearing on which the court issued notice to the NAB.

The reference hearing was then adjourned till June 30.
