Lil Nas X Addresses “Copying” FKA Twigs’ ‘Cellophane’ Video

Lil Nas X is addressing all the controversies and criticisms that his recent music video for Montero (Call Me By Your Name) is getting. There were accusations of his music video being a bit too similar to the one by FKA Twigs.

The rapper dropped his new devil-themed video last week and fans pointed out on social media that its pole-dancing visuals are similar to those in FKA Twigs’ Cellophane. The song by FKA Twigs was released back in 2019 in April. Even the director of the music video agreed and tweeted that Montero’s visuals are copying his own work.

However, Lil Nas X also addressed the rumors on 30th March as he took to his Instagram to praise the music video of Cellophane. He let fans know that he and FKA Twigs had recently talked about the entire situation. His post also included a snippet from Cellophane which was choreographed by Kelly Yvonne. Kelly also choreographed Montero.

“I want to show love to @fkatwigs & @andrewthomashuang !” the “Old Town Road” vocalist captioned it. “the ‘cellophane’ visual is a masterpiece. I was not aware that the visual would serve as a major inspiration for those who worked on the effects of my video.”

“I want to say thank u to twigs for calling me and informing me about the similarities between the two videos…”

He further continued as he expressed his gratitude to FKA Twigs for calling him and informing him about the similarities between their videos. The rapper clarified that he was not aware they were so similar and was just excited for the video to release. He said, “I want to say thank u to twigs for calling me and informing me about the similarities between the two videos, as I was not aware they were so close. was only excited for the video to come out. I understand how hard you worked to bring this visual to life. you deserve so much more love and praise.”

FKA Twigs shared her own post after this and addressed the two videos. Her post included a photo of Lil Nas X holding a rose. She thanked the Old Town singer for their “honest” conversation and for acknowledging the inspiration Cellophane gave him and his creative team. The singer further expressed her appreciation for the “iconic” video and said Lil Nas X has done amazing.

She wrote, “thank you @lilnasx for our gentle honest conversations and for acknowledging the inspiration cellophane gave you and your creative team in creating your iconic video! I think what you have done is amazing and I fully support your expression and bravery in pushing culture forward for the queer community. legend status.”

Andrew Thomas Huang who directed Cellophane has a thread on his recent Twitter post as he called himself a Lil Nas X fan. However, he said a project that “repurposes someone’s labor and ideas to serve their brand image” does harm to the artists who put in the “original leg work.”

He continued as he explained that whether it was intentional or not, copying other artists’ work happens. The director added that making music videos is a labor of love and the demand for content pushed by labels renders their work. Andrew said, “Making music videos is a labor of love. The demand for content pushed by major labels renders our work disposable and pits artists against each other.”

Meanwhile, Tanu Muino, the director of Montero did not share their thoughts on the entire situation. Kelly, who choreographed both the videos reposted the Cellophane footage that Lil Nas X shared. She simply captioned, “¡Stream #CELLOPHANE and #MONTERO on all platforms!”
