Katy Perry says she and Taylor Swift ‘fight like cousins’ after rumors they’re distantly related
Katy Perry was in for quite a surprise when she called into the U.K.’s Capital FM on Friday.
During Friday’s episode of Capital Breakfast With Roman Kemp, Sian Welby brought up a rumor that the singers are ninth cousins. ‘I read somewhere that your baby might have a very famous aunt,’ said Sian. ‘Apparently, you and Taylor Swift are ninth cousins.’
“Well, we fight like cousins,” the Roar star joked. Perry was referencing the pair’s infamous Bad Blood-era feud.
The singer joked about the fanfic at first, but was stunned to discover Welby and her fellow hosts were being dead serious about the connection to her fellow superstar. Apparently, some fan put together the whole thing on the family history platform, My Heritage. “Wow, I’m gonna have to ask her if this is true, or if we should, like, get blood tests together. It’s cool because you can just, like, spit in a tube.” Perry said while wearing a bright yellow hoodie from her brand-new Smile merch line.
A Timeline of the Infamous Feud
It’s no secret Perry and Swift have some history. The artists had a famous feud for years, which reportedly began in 2014 after Katy allegedly took dancers away from Taylor.
However, Perry and Swift eventually made amends. There was no more fitting end to the feud of nearly five years than a literal olive branch. Perry sent Swift a symbolic olive branch at the start of the Reputation Tour. Swift posted a photo of the olive branch and a handwritten note from Perry to her Instagram Stories.
Almost a year after the olive branch, Swift gave a delicious looking plate of cookies to Katy. Perry shared a photo of a plate of cookies with the frosted phrase, “Peace at last” alongside two icing peace signs. Swift was tagged in the post, captioned, “feels good ???? @taylorswift.” Perry geo-tagged the location of her post, “Let’s Be Friends” and Swift commented 13 pink heart emojis beneath the post.
They then ran into each other at a few parties and talked things out. They also put any rift rumors to rest by hugging it out in Swift’s music video for “You Need to Calm Down.”
Talking about the music video, Perry said, ‘Even though it was difficult, it was important to make that appearance in the music video because people want people to look up to. We wanted it to be an example of unity. Forgiveness is important. It’s so powerful. If you can forgive your enemy, that’s amazing. As difficult as it is!’
Swift and Perry on their friendship now
In June of last year, Swift was on the same radio show and talked about making amends with Perry after a years-long feud. “Something felt so much lighter about my life when things became really good between us,” she noted. “And, you know, she and I have been fine for a while. And really on good terms but we didn’t know if we were ever really gonna tell people about it. We wanted to make sure that was solid between us before we ever made, you know, the public aware.”
In an interview in March, earlier this year, Katy addressed her and Swift’s friendship status. “We don’t have a very close relationship because we are very busy, but we text a lot,” she said. “I was impressed by her documentary, Miss Americana. Because I saw some self-awareness starting to happen and I saw a lot of vulnerability. I was really excited for her to be able to show that to the world, that things aren’t perfect. They don’t have to be and it’s more beautiful when they aren’t. ”
Katy Perry On Her Newest Album, Smile
During her chat on Capital Breakfast, the pop star also opened up about releasing the title track to her upcoming fifth studio album, Smile. Perry returned to her whimsical roots as a glamorous, sad clown on the cover of her upcoming album, which she debuted on Instagram. The pop star spoke about the new album being about her ‘journey towards the light’ and revealed that the title track was penned during one of the ‘darkest times’ in her life.
“What it is, is it says in the lyrics kind of everything the album embodies,” she dished of the upbeat tune. “Which is, like, hopefulness, resilience, joy, love and that whole journey. And so that’s why it’s kind of the opus of the record. That’s why the record is called Smile, because it’s as simple as the fact that I had lost my smile and couldn’t get it back. And I got it back, obviously. It’s just a simple emotional, physical signal that speaks volumes and so it really is the definition of the journey that I had to go through.”
