Kangana Ranaut: You can’t be a Gandhi supporter and a Netaji supporter at the same time

Kangana Ranaut’s controversial comments and social media posts continue to make news. And her most recent remark has outraged the nation as a whole.

Last week, the Manikarnika actress claimed that India’s 1947 independence was merely bheek (alms) and that the country’s true independence came when the PM Modi-led BJP government took power in 2014.

“Either you are a Gandhi fan or a Netaji supporter,” the actress said in an ancient newspaper piece uploaded on her Instagram Story. You can’t have it all; you have to pick and choose.” The newspaper article in question was from a 1940s article with the headline “Gandhi, others agree to hand over Netaji.”

“Those who battled for the freedom were “given over” to their masters…by those who had no guts burning/boiling hot blood to battle their oppressors but were power-hungry and clever,” she added in a second Instagram Story.

“Those are the ones who taught us, if someone hits you, offer another cheek for one more slap and that is how you would earn aazaadi,” she continued, referring to Mahatma Gandhi. That’s not how you get aazadi; that’s how you get bheekh. Make sensible choices for your heroes.”

“So you need to choose who you support because simply putting them all in one box of your memories and wishing them all on their birth anniversaries every year is not enough,” she concluded. It’s not just stupid; it’s also terribly irresponsible and superficial. One must be aware of one’s own history and heroes.”

Kangana had previously stated that if someone could prove her wrong, she would return her Padma Shri award. Meanwhile, Kangana has been criticized by politicians and people from all walks of life for her views.

Padma Shree Kangana

Ranaut made her “azaadi” statement at a news channel event last week, only two days after President Ram Nath Kovind presented her with the Padma Shri.

Since then, she has been attacked by politicians from all political parties, historians, academics, fellow actors, and others, with many claiming she should return her medal.

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, criticized Ranaut’s speech on Monday, stating that such remarks are only made for “publicity.”

“How can this be published?” We shouldn’t even pay attention to it. Should we even be concerned about it? Such statements should not be taken seriously. In fact, Kumar believes it should be criticized.
