James Gunn has stated his desire to create a Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff series based on The Ravagers. The 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) instalment is based on the comic book of the same name.

The group is led by Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who runs away after stealing a powerful item. Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot bring him on this adventure (Vin Diesel).

The Ravagers are introduced as an alien crime syndicate made up of space pirates, mercenaries, and other skilled bandits. There are numerous factions dispersed throughout the galaxy, each led by a different leader. They do have their own set of rules, such as not stealing from other Ravagers or dealing in children.

They first appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, but returned in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Endgame. Peter was kidnapped from Earth by Ravager Yondu Udonta’s (Michael Rooker) group after his mother died.

Here’s What James Gunn Says

Gunn discussed his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe in an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Comic Book Movie) (DCEU).

He stated that he has always thought the Ravagers would make an excellent television show. Gunn also claims to have discussed the idea with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige on a previous film set. As of this writing, Marvel has made no progress on any project.

Feige’s MCU is purposeful and has a grand plan that it follows throughout its phases. While the Ravagers have the potential to be a really great television show, it’s unlikely to happen unless Feige sees some value in it for the larger universe.

Given that there are so many Ravager groups scattered throughout the universe and that the multiverse is currently being explored, it’s best not to rule anything out. Despite the popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, it’s unlikely in the near future. If this were to happen, Gunn would be the ideal candidate.
